Review of Eve`s Christmas
Introduction
It`s that time of year again as they start to roll out the Christmas titles. There`s a bunch of them this year ands I shall don my red hat and holly twig and get into the spirit. As the shops have already decided to dictate the consumer pace it`s not a great surprise that they are pushing these discs so early.
Strictly a B movie, in the good old days `made for TV` this has been issued on a budget DVD, around £9.99. One of many aimed at the early teens and chick flick market this is an old fashioned fairy tale of lurve.
Eve is a successful marketing executive. She is Queen of the slick delivery and is also a nice, caring employer who treats her old school friend now her secretary well. On the downside Eve has an empty personal life which means she is having a shallow affair with her slimy married boss. It seems it all stems from a decision made some years ago when she decided to leave her high school sweetheart for the big, bad city.
After a liquid dinner Eve is feeling just fine and meeting an apparently homeless man she shares some banter and he recommends she wishes on the Christmas star. It seems that the man is her Guardian Angel and he`s going to let her make her decision all over again. Waking up in her bed at her parents house, she finds she has the chance to do it right this time but are things really so different?
There are no big stars in this film, it`s strictly TV bodies. Elisa Donovan has previously appeared in Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Clueless and even Beverly Hills 90210. Sebastian Spence has recently appeare in Battlestar Galactica so perhaps he`s the next big thing? Some of the cast share a background in Stargate so look out for ever-so-slightly familiar faces from the Guald or Tokra. Also appearing, another Angel, Cheryl Ladd plays Eve`s mother.
Video
This is not great shakes in the picture department. The low budget nature of the project means this is less than average. With this kind of fantasy it demands a something special and there`s nothing there TV shows have come up with more inventiveness than this.
There are no hiccups or glitches and the picture itself is clear but rather dull and dreary which again doesn`t help the fairy-tale nature of the plot.
Audio
There`s something hideous about Christmas music out of season and it happens all the time as shops go into Christmas overdrive in September. The music in this is not awful but constant repetition could drive you crazy. There is a fairly standard soundtrack as well as the ubiquitous Christmas tunes.
Features
A "making of" extra is an excuse for a big-love in with the cast and crew.
There are also trailers for the other films in this batch. Soon to be reviewed on this site folks.
Conclusion
You may well have seen this before, it`s Peggy Sue Got Married by way of Family Man with a smattering of It`s a Wonderful Life. It`s pure smaltz and should be taken with a large dose of salt. I confess that I enjoyed it despite a large plot hole at the end. It is innocent and fun being entirely unrelated to real life. My guess is that pre-teens will love it, there`s nothing here to make the parents blush. It`s not going to advance the art of flim-making but at least it has a story that`s easy to follow and it`s no worse than many similar films wirth much greater budgets.
