Your Opinions and Comments
I`d like to take this opportunity to dismiss a comment the reviewer made about Christina Ricci
"Christina Ricci show us that she has come a long way from the Addams Family and Casper and can do well in "real" roles"
I`m sorry but i`d haveto totally disagree with you here, she was like a cardboard cut out, she acted her lines with no passion whatsoever and the monotone droning when she had more than a few words to say was beyond bearing. The only good thing about Ricci in this film was that her looks fitted the part perfectly, she`s one hell of a spooky looking chick :-)
None the less, a good movie and i`d recommend it to anyone else
The Headless Horseman , brought back into the Nineties by Tim Burton , and once again he has delivered the Goods . You all know the Story , The Headless Horseman wants his Head back , so he will take your`s , until it is Returned .
The Film is carried in the usual style of Tim Burtons Directing Talents , with Clever use of Darkness , Morbid looking settings and Choice of Actors to keep you Glued to the screen . Use of ound and Music is Used to the max in the Film , listen to the Horse as it Rumbles on your Speaker System and Music that draws you more into the Film .
Picture Quality is Beautiful , Especially considering the Use of Dark , Dull , Washed out Colours , there is no ` Patches ` on the Picture .
Extras Are really what you could ask for out of this DVD , with the ` Making of ` and ` Directors Commentry ` my personal Favorites.
A Excellent Movie to watch and a Definate Recommendation for your DVD Collection .
The video transfer is very good. There are no compression signs and the picture is clear. Most of the colors are de-saturated and the palette tends to be grey-green, which contributes a lot to the movies` eerie atmosphere. Mind you, there are numerous gory scenes (decapitations, mainly), which are done very professionally.
The DD 5.1 soundtrack is ok. The surrounds are used occasionally, but I would`ve expected a more enveloping sound.
The menus are all still.
The extras include a commentary by the director, about half an hour of a behind the scenes look and interviews and a photo gallery.
Bottom line - a rather good movie, but not for the faint of heart.
film, and Sleepy Hollow is that. Although thought by many as a horror, it is more of an adventure, with a few spooky moments and plenty `rolling heads`. But not a gory film as some people expected. It has a decent cast with Depp and Ricci the main characters, but there are plenty of familiar faces in supporting roles, and the acting is good all round. The visual is very good, Burton has a very cold, dark feel to the film, with washed out colours that gives a gothic feel, and sets a very atmospheric world. Audio is also very good with the thundering of horse hoof`s, and screaching horse cry`s, lightning, sword slices and other effects, flowing through the surround sound. The extas don`t let this disc down either, with a commentary (always welcome especially when Mr Burton is involved) a `Behind The Legend` documentary, a `Reflections On Sleepy Hollow` featurette, trailer/teaser, cast bio`s etc. Just what you would require on a DVD. Overall a good film with great visual and sound, and not spoilt by lack of extras. Worthy of a place in your DVD collection.
The cast is made up of Americans, Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci and British acting greats. No surprise then that the acting is superb, infinitely better than your average horror film. Depp shows us his versatility and is believable as both a wimpy scientist and action hero. The only downside is the non-plausible relationship with Ricci. I felt that this was done to please the studio execs but it doesn?t detract too much from the film.
As a horror film / mystery, Sleepy Hollow is effective. There are no real scares but it is always entertaining. The mystery element is well executed and will keep you guessing as in an Agatha Christie movie.
The extras are pleasing and very informative. I would have liked deleted scenes or a longer version of the film. Overall, Sleepy Hollow is one of the best films in recent years. It is well acted, well directed, has an engaging plot and is very entertaining.
Video: Clear, sharp transfer with some grain, but it`s obviously appropriate to the filming style. I spotted 1 or two instances of pixellation in very fast-moving or foggy shots, but you would only notice them if you were looking for artifacts.
Audio: Again, very good with nice use of surrounds and the subwoofer.
I really enjoyed this film, as it has a nice horror theme but with some humor in it, and a very dark and spooky visual style, brought perfectly to life with this DVD.
I do like this movie. It was my favourite Tim Burton film, but then I saw Edward Scissorhands. It does come above Beetlejuice just though. It is wonderful to look at, which is good as most know the story. The enthusiasm that Burton puts into the project though makes this stand out as the best adaptation. It is pure entertainment, but with an intelligent storyt to boot. The acting is excellent. Ricci may be the week link, but the rest of the cast are just so damn good. I`m a massive Depp fan, and his English accent is just the right amount of hamming up it needs. He doesn`t dissapoint, AGAIN. The predominently English cast also give the movie the wonderful hammer horror feel that makes it so good.
VIDEO
A wonderful transfer, which is lucky as the visuals are what make this movie what it is. The transfer can really show the difference between the almost black and white exteriors and the vibrant interiors. No complaints from me here.
AUDIO
Very nice as well. It isn`t stunning, but it does the job it needs to and is quite creepy in places. I don`t really know a lot about the technicalities of audio tracks, but I thought it was good.
EXTRAS
This isn;t the most extra packed disc you`ll have seen, not by a long shot. It has a commentary by Burton, but like most of his tracks, it`s not really an engaing listen. I`d really like to see a track with Depp and Burton, as they must be good pals. There are no deleted scenes, but a couple of featurettes, one is a HBO first look, and the other is a talking heads one. Both are perfectly satisfactory. They`re not indepth. but they don`t bore the general viewer who might want to know a little more about the movie. Their are some interesting facts that pop up, such as Christopher Walken (in Ken Dodd mode for this movie by the look of his hair and teeth) couldn`t actually ride a horse! A nice documentary really. The menus are also quite nice as well, as far as menus go.
