Synopsis:
Gérard Jugnot is Clément Mathieu, a despondent composer and newly employed teacher who arrives at Fond de l`Etang (Rock Bottom) a dismal reform school for boys. The year is 1949 and the country has not yet recovered from the devastating effects of World War II. Many of the school-boys are orphaned, and are there to be taught discipline. Mathieu undoubtedly faces a challenge, not least from Rachin (Francois Berleand), the cruel and totalitarian headmaster.
Out of his depth and desperate to develop a rapport with his charges, Mathieu turns to his passion, music. Despite Rachin`s objections he organises the boys into a choir. For once they are given a place to belong, and the unusual attention and encouragement entices even the more onerous students to participate. Even in the most incorrigible boy, Pierre Moranghe (Jean Baptise Maunier), Mathieu eventually uncovers a remarkable talent...
