Review of I`m with Lucy

6 / 10

Introduction

Lucy (gets dumped by her boyfriend. Very publicly. In an elevator. He tells her she`s no good in bed. Lucy is not having a good day.

Flick forward to a year later and Lucy is getting married. She tells her friends about the joys of blind dates.

So we follow Lucy through her year of blind dates to see if we can guess who she will marry.

The candidates are:

Doug (John Hannah) -It`s an inauspicious start; Lucy is blind drunk when she goes out with Doug the entomologist.

Gabriel (Gael Garcia Bernal)-Lucy meets the European playwright Gabriel and feels a compelling physical attraction.

Bobby (Anthony la Paglia)-A retired baseball player Bobby has a very direct attitude with women. Will Lucy`s choice of Vivaldi put him off?

Barry (Henry Thomas)-Lucy really hits it off with Barry and he meets her parents (Julie Christie and Harold Ramis) but is it too much too soon?

Luke (David Boreanaz) - when Lucy goes to Florida she meets Luke an orthopaedic surgeon. He tanned rich and successful and quotes poetry, how romantic is that?

Henry Thomas is best known for "My Best Friend is an Alien" or as Eliott in E.T.
David Boreanaz made this in the spaces between the fourth and fifth seasons of "Angel". John Hannah seems to have fallen into the spaces between the floorboards-not really romantic comedy material -I can`t see him appealing to the average age viewer of this. Anthony la Paglia previously appeared as Jane Reeves "English" brother in Frasier.Happily here he sticks to American.

Video

As a recent transfer there are no quibbles with the picture. It`s clear and sharp with some nice contrasts between the New York and Florida locations.

Audio

There`s some great music on the soundtrack and its not in your face all the time. I`ve not heard of many of the `popular music` artists which means they were cheap.

Might even be worth looking out for the soundtrack CD but this budget film may not have one.

Features

Cast and crew interviews

Reasonably lengthy interviews with character insights.

Trailer

Pretty awful trailer that would make me avoid the film.

Conclusion

Surprisingly, this film is actually a thoughtful and entertaining exploration of what a girl might look for in a lifetime companion. The final outcome is never really in doubt although with the choice offered she might consider changing her religion and taking one for every week day.

This is a budget production and lacks any big stars. They`ve used their resources well and selected actors particularly Bernal and Boreanaz that will attract other fan bases into the film.

Lucy comes across as more intelligent than Bridget and this film is a considerable improvement on Bridget Jones` second outing. It`s good fun and undemanding- a girls` night in special.

It`s worth noting that the Region One film has been out for some time and will no doubt be a cheaper purchase.
