After watching it for the very first time I can honestly say that most of the bad press was not justified. At all!
OK, so we`re used to see Americans and Germans in submarines, and not Russians, but hey, as a movie - this one sure delivers.
The movie tells the semi-true story of the men of the K-19, a Soviet sub, which got into some deep $hit (pun intended) back in the early 60`s.
Harrison Ford gives a striking performance in a very unique role for him.
The video transfer is very good. There are no compression signs nor scratches and the transfer`s color palette helps create the claustrophobic atmosphere in the sub.
The DD 5.1 soundtrack is very good. Naturally, the surrounds are used throughout the movie and add a lot to the already claustrophobic atmosphere.
The menus are nicely animated with sound.
The extras include a commentary by the director and cinematographer and apx. 40 minutes of behind the scenes with emphasis on the special effects and the make up procedure.
Bottom line - a good submarine thriller with some fine acting and a more-than-decent disc to match.
