Review of Complete Willo The Wisp, The

10 / 10

Introduction

There`s something blue and extremely camp living in the depths of Doily Wood.

Yes, at last it`s the complete collection of 26 (count `em) episodes of "Willo the Wisp" on one DVD. And all at under a tenner!

If you ever needed proof that Kenneth Williams was indeed a comic genius and capable of so much more than the odd "Ooh, Matron", then you need to watch this disk. He is the voice behind all the characters in the programme and plays each with a unique style that never fails to captivate. His ability to breath life into each character is quite amazing and shows just what a gifted man he was.

Video

Let’s face it - we are not going to get reference-quality visuals with a 1981 children’s TV animated series. The picture is slightly shaky, grainy and dirty, but the colours are well defined and accurate. Basically, it`s as good as the day it was made. Such concerns are forgotten, however, as soon as the first episode starts. You`ll soon stop concentrating on the picture and become engrossed in the wonderment of the stories themselves.

Audio

Again, no great surprises here. Crackling and hiss is noticeable but the narration is crystal-clear throughout. Williams has never sounded better - all his vocal nuances have been transferred and makes the programme into a magical experience.

Features

Just the one really, but DON`T TOUCH! It`ll ruin your evening.

Conclusion

This is a part of our history, a part of a golden age in broadcasting when children`s television was innocently enjoyable and memorable. Forget today`s Rugrats, Pokemon and Tweenies, this series appeals to us on a higher level, appealing more than ever to adults as well as children. Some of the jokes are pitched at the adult level and are exceedingly amusing. Just take a look at Willo`s hand actions during some of the episodes - all the limp wristed, hand on hip mannerisms of Kenneth Williams are there.
