Review of Mummy`s Shroud, The

Introduction

Once upon a time Hammer was a well known by word for cheap and cheerful horror films. Many of them became classics-this is not one of them.

In ancient Egypt a servant vows to protect his Prince unto death and beyond. Four thousand years later the Prince`s tomb is found and the contents carried back to Cairo. The body of the Prince covered in the family shroud (which incidentally is rather on the short side) is put beside the mummy of his servant, Prem.

The Guardian of the tomb, not best pleased about being out of a job, uses the shroud to summon the servant`s spirit who then sets about wreaking revenge on those who desecrated the tomb.

Video

This quite old film has made a remarkably clean look presumably from a reasonable original transfer onto video. There is very little damage or grain.

Alas no money for special effects so nothing to see except right at the end but you will have switched off long before then.

Filmed on one size suits all `foreign set`.

Audio

Adequate reproduction of the sound and nothing to get excited about. The script ranks as the dullest I`ve ever heard. It is not even in the `so bad it`s good` category.

I couldn`t find any I`m pleased to say.

Conclusion

Dull, deadly and disappointing. Not one of Hammer Horror`s most memorable films. It may sell a few copies on the back of Mummy- fever thanks to the splendiferous if simplistic recent movies. Unfortunately a dull script and minimal budget do not an interesting movie make. They all seem to be sleep walking through this film with more life in the long-dead Egyptian. The one ray of light was seeing Roger Delgado, the Master from Dr Who. However his portrayal of a crazed Arab was hideously stereotyped.

From the Hammy potted history of an Egyptian dynasty to the final few minutes I was hoping it would soon be over and willing the mummy to kill them all.I can`t recommend a purchase or even a rent as life, even eternal life, is just too short.
