Review of Alien
Introduction
What can I say about Alien that hasn`t already been said? Not a lot really. Arguably one of the greatest science fiction/horror movies of all time, with some of the most memorable (and often copied or parodied) scenes ever laid down on film.
This was one of those films which built up its legendary status whilst I was at school, with it being discussed in hushed tones for years, until any of us were actually old enough to be allowed to see it. It was great back then, and it`s still brilliant today.
Video
A great film deserves a great transfer, and we get a THX approved 2.35:1 anamorphic picture which looks utterly fantastic. All of Ridley Scott`s stunning visuals and H.R. Giger`s designs are recreated beautifully on this disc. Everything looks just right.
Alien is one of those films that many of us will only have seen on TV or full frame VHS before. If that`s the case, do yourself a favour and get this DVD version, to see how much better it looks.
Audio
The sound has been remixed into full DD5.1 and matches the quality of the video. Surround channels are not over-used, but are still used to good effect. There are plenty of moments that will make you jump out of your seat, and some calmer moments when you can appreciate another brilliant Jerry Goldsmith score.
Features
This disc is packed with quality extras.
First and foremost, there`s the commentary track with Ridley Scott. This is a very interesting commentary, with Scott revealing a mountain of information about the film, how some of the effects shots were done, how he asked actors to jiggle in their seats, and loads more besides. Very definitely worth listening too, even if he talks with a mouth full of fat cigar now and then!
And there are two more audio tracks too - an isolated score and an alternative music track.
You`ll also find storyboards, production photos and some of the original Alien artwork. Add to that some out-takes, plenty of deleted scenes (including one that has been much talked about over the years), and some more textual information that`s hidden away in two Easter Egg features.
And there`s more, with TV spots and trailers which prove that they really don`t know how to make good trailers any more!
Whilst I don`t class menus as extras, the menus on this disc warrant a mention as they are brilliant!
Conclusion
A brilliant film gets the full DVD treatment. A fantastically restored picture, remixed sound and the commentary track alone make this an excellent package. Add in all of the other extras and it becomes an absolute must buy!
I`ve seen this film so many times now, but it`s still enjoyable time after time. The best of the Alien "franchise" in my opinion, and unlikely to be bettered, this truly is a masterpiece that deserves a home in every film fan`s collection.
