Sixth Sense, The (UK)

Let me start by saying that this film is very confusing when watching it first time around, unless you have one of those brains which are very perceptive.

Basically, the storyline goes is that a child pyschologist (Bruce Willis) has to heal a small boy, who has a secret.

Anyway, I don`t want too say to much about the plot, as this could easily spoil the whole film. There aren`t many bits that are going to make you jump, but I was watching it on my own in the dark :)

Transfer is excellent, as is to be expected with any big budget movie. Audio is crystal clear, and the soundtrack really does build up some of key parts in the film, and making them scarier. It has a nice array of features, but I won`t comment on those, because I barely watch features.

The script for this film is rather weird, and I`ve watched it twice to make sure I can understand it, however, don`t let that put you off, because it is a great movie. It is also the first movie in which we don`t see Bruce Willis wearing a sweat laden, grime covered vest revealing his muscular chest. In fact, he is well dressed and even clean shaven.

This wasn`t the most of enjoyable movies for me, but nevertheless, still an essential movie of anyones prized DVD collection.

Yes. A great score here. Loads of extras, interviews and insight. A nice film too. Spooky, but intellectually interesting at the same time. A clever film too - one which will be interesting to see the 2nd time round ! So I would say, even if you`re not into supernatural films, you might like to try this one. It`s milder, and the director, I have to say, is a very clever man. The music is great. DVD quality is excellent. The only thing missing is audio commentary - but don`t let that put you off - they more than make up for it.

When I first sat down to watch this film, I stopped half way as I did not like it. Having spoken to a friend, I was pursuaded to continue watching to the end. Everything made sense and I realised that it is an excellent film.

When I watched this movie at the cinema I did not know what to expect. I did guess the twist though before I had even seen the film which kind of spoiled the ending for me.

What stood out for me about the film was how well Haley Joel Osment acted in the movie and the under stated perfomance of vest man, Bruce Willis in a career best.

The actual DVD is excellent. There are more features than you can shake a stick at with the best being the deleted scenes.

The picture quality is brilliant with vibrant fall colours similar to the classic Exorcist. The sound is also rather good, the score is excellent and at times rattles the speakers.

I would recommend this movie to anybody with a DVD player as the whole disc just oozes class and quality. And if you don`t feel sorry for young Cole throughout the movie then you have a cold cold heart.

Awsome DVD . Must be in your collection. Oozing with KWALITY written all over it.

Aye.

Content:- A very watchable film with an intelligent script, decent acting (even from Mr Willis, which can be rare these days) and a decent ending, for a change. Its a very quiet film with seemingly not many people in it, which is hard to explain (tee hee) but even so I was not bored one little teeny bit.

Video:- A very nice transfer, faultless as you would expect. This film has a very nice warm feeling to it with some simple but pleasing visuals, all represented as good as could be. Aye.

Audio:- And a very smooth one it is too, helping the chilling soundtrack come to life just fine. Aye.

Features:- Not perfect, but damn fine all the same. Quality over quantity I suppose, but only just. Yep.

Overall:- To be honest I was a teeny bit dissapointed with this film, but nevermind. Everybody always went on about the ending and how great it was, but I thought it was nowhere near as `twisty` as the ending for Fight Club or some other films. Apart from that the film as a whole was very satisfying, it just didnt quite live up to the hype. Nevermind though.

I went to the theatre to see this film, and was glad i went to see an early showing, for i had no idea what to expect, and with a brilliant but simple twist i came out of the cimema
gobsmacked. A very good film which is different, and was like a breath of fresh air at the time it was released. With not wanting to spoil the plot, i won`t go into the story (although you must have come across this film by now) But the acting is first class and indeed even Mr Willis is convincing without an action scene in sight! Haley is excellent as the troubled youngster as is his mother, and the eagle eyed will spot a barely unrecognisable Donnie Wahlberg, who for his short time in the film is again convincing. The quality of this picture
is spot on as you would expect from a recent release, as is the sound which is vital to some of the scary moments, and sets the mood brilliantly. The extras are decent with `Rules and Clues` `Reaching the Audiance` adding something different
as well as the usual storyboard, cast bio`s, and some interesting deleted scenes. Overall a very good film which
looking back is a clever yet simple story with a twist, which you will certainly watch more than once. Full credit to Mr Shyamalan whom i will be waiting with intrest to see his next release.

A well acted and original film on a well put together disc. Bruce Willis is excellent in this and Haley Joel Osment is scarily good (i.e. outstanding). The picture & audio is excellent, and the extras are pretty good. The only thing that I would have really liked to see is a commentary from the director. Still there’s a lot to be said for quality over quantity! Worthy of note are the deleted scenes, I particularly liked the director’s introduction to each scene, which seems to work much better than a commentary option (which means you have to watch the scene twice, once with commentary & once without).

There is a 2 disc set of this film coming out at the end of Sept 02 with a few more extras (still, sadly no commentary) which might be worth waiting for if you’re considering buying.

Introduction
Horror films aren`t really my thing. I`ve watched a number over the years and some are good, and some are bad. Some are scary and some are not.
I tend to only watch those that I think are interesting in other ways, not because they are horror films per-se.

The sixth sense got a lot of publicity when it came out, and was marketed as a horror film.
I heard the "I see dead people" clip too often on adverts.

Anyway, eventually it came round on TV, and I decided that I would give it a go.
I was knocked out and it made a huge impression on me, I kept replaying the twists of the plot over and over in my mind.

So - despite having seen the film, and knowing the brilliant twist at the end, I ended up getting the DVD.
Being the penny pinching person I am, this doesn`t happen too often.

The Plot
A child psychiatrist is trying to help out a young boy who has a dark secret.
The plot moves on brilliantly, taking you with it, revealling step by step up to the final conclusion.
I feel any more details would start to give away some of the great twists in the plot.

The Cast
Bruce Willis is the Psychiatrist and plays the role with a gentleness that is not in character with some of his other films.
Haley Joel Ossmet plays the boy, and is great.
A few other characters but those are the main ones.
His mother, and Vincent are also good.

The Visuals/Audio
Visuals are ok, and surround sound is used occasionally.

The Extras
An excellent set of extras. No commentary, but some great insights into the production and making.

Summary
I don`t think this is really a horror film. There are a few slightly gory shots but really its not about that at all.
Rather its a really touching story of a boy and the doctor who tries to rescue him.
Some really fine performances and scenes, but the plot is what really drives the film.
A brilliant twist at the end that I didn`t see coming at all.
Even the 2nd time through I was rivetted by the story. Of course you see a different side to the film the 2nd time through but it all still works.
Has to be high up in my list of favourite DVDs. Get it!
