Review of Taggart (Vol. 36): Fearful Lightning

7 / 10

Introduction

A woman is struck by lightening inside a spiritualist church. Shortly before a young man had shouted from the audience that the spiritualist Martin Strange had stolen his mother`s money. When Jardine takes the case he is cynical as to the extent of Strange`s talent. When Martin Strange starts talking about an older man called Jim who had a fondness for malt whiskey, Jardine is seriously spooked, especially when he starts offering clues in the case.

The case becomes very personal for Mike who is disturbed by his memories of the almost father/son relationship he had with Taggart.

Lots of talented extras on display here including Larry Lamb who gives a credible performance of someone who may or may not be a charlatan.

Video

Although not strictly DVD material this disc is a pretty good transfer of a TV programme. The high production values are reflected in a good clear picture, which can be viewed on a 14inch TV through the PS2 with a still pleasing result!

Audio

Produced in Dolby Digital the soundtrack is good and clear. This kind of programme is pretty dependent on dialogue with the occasional action sequence.

Features

Just chapter selection and access to cast and credits section.
As a budget issue the idea is obviously to get all the full-length Taggart TV films out while it still has a fan base.

Conclusion

There`s always a satisfyingly high body count in Taggart that if you took it to heart it might seriously put you off living in Glasgow. On that basis Oxford is out also. These stories are always dependable and a pleasant enough way to spend an evening if multiple murder is your bag. These are a budget issue so if you are a fan you will no doubt be building the extra shelves already.
