Review of Chocky`s Children

6 / 10

Introduction

In the first series called `Chocky` a young boy called `Matthew is contacted by an alien mind who calls herself `Chocky`. She has some important information she wishes to share. The wrong people find out about this and kidnap Matthew to get the information for them selves.

This series starts a year later when Matthew is no longer in contact with Chocky. His amazing artistic ability developed under the influence of Chocky has remained. Now he starts to draw pictures of windmills in great detail. He also draws pictures of locations around the world.

Sent off to stay with his aunt while his parents are abroad he meets Albertine who is a mathematical genius. They start to talk through telepathy and Mathew is convinced that Chocky is now helping Albertine.

However the same people that kidnapped him the year before are now after Albertine. Will he be able to save her?

The original story was based on a John Wyndham book of the same name.

Look out for Ed Bishop (UFO) as the prime baddie. Also the great James Hazeldine and Carol Drinkwater(All Creatures Great and Small) as Matthew`s parents.

Video

The series was made in a mixture of video and film and therefore has the studio bound look of a low budget children`s series.
It is a reasonably clean transfer with no obvious print damage.

Audio

Presented in the original mono. This is not a problem as there is little other than dialogue. The electronic effects for Chocky`s voice sound very dated.`

Features

No extras on this disc.
Static menu with scene access.

Conclusion

The series is presented, as it was on the television complete with the now defunct Thames TV signature at the beginning of every episode. I found it quite slow moving. Still enjoyable though with some dramatic moments as the children link with the `uni-mind` (only kidding).

We seem to be used to much faster moving drama these days and the most likely sales are to the thirty something`s who remember it with affection.
