Your Opinions and Comments
I really didn`t know whether I`d like this film at all. I mean, I liked Luhrmann`s version of Romeo and Juliet, but, apart from Singin` in the Rain, I pretty much hated musicals, so I sat back not really expecting much at all. How wrong I was. After a slightly dizzying start, you soon get used to the wonderful visual style of the film, and really get sucked into the story. The story itself is very simple, but the film just works, in its own mad crazy OTT way. As I said the visuals are some of the most daring and inventive I have ever seen, and even if it is unrealistic, it seems to bring the Moulin Rouge to life. Thebest visuals are the sepia toned postcard views of Paris at the start, but it`s just a beautiful film from start to finish. The modern pop songs do really work. When they sing Your Song, you probably won`t get it out of your head for a few days. It is truly the acting that brings this film alive. The two leads work very well together, with Nicole Kidman showing she is one of the hardest working and most diverse actresses working today, and Ewan McGregor showing that he can be good if he sin;t working with a Star Wars script. The supports are also good, with Broadbent and Leguiziamo the best, his depiction of Toulouse LaTrec is `astonishing` Baz Luhrmann has created a true masterpiece here, which, while not to everyones taste, has got my expectations of it beaten.
VIDEO
The first disc is packed with soundtracks and commentaries it`s amazing that the picture still looks so good. The film is full of such rich colours and vibrant dance sequences it is vital that the iage holds up and it does it with ease. I never noticed the layer hop, and it is just a sumptuous widescreen transfer.
AUDIO
Both DD and DTS and both are superb, vital in a loud film like this. The surrounds are given a thorough work out all the way through the movie, and it is an all encompassing experience with a great clarity
EXTRAS
So we lose a little over the R1 release, but not alot. This two disc set is packed to the very edges, with a couple of commentaries on disc 1 and some branch out segments as well. All are very good, and you wonder wether Luhrmann actually breathes or ever stops. Onto disc two and it is simply an indepth look at every stage of the movie that you could wish to see. Being interested in the visuals, the area on the CGI effects was of particular interest. There are then many music videos and trailers, some inventive phot galleries, yes, inventive ones. One even plays out like a trip down a Parisian Street, and then the 10+ hidden features round off possibly 20th Century Foxes best disc yet.
