Titanic is definately NOT the best movie ever made. It is, however, a brilliant one.
I`ve first seen the movie in the theater and was obviously impressed, but even a good theater cannot be compared to a good home theater set.
The story itself is not a very unusual one. I guess one cannot call it a typical love story, but frankly, it is. It is told, however, in a beautiful manner, trying (and succeeding) to avoid being too corny and clich`e driven. All the leads are played remarkably well (yeah, even Leo).
The DVD comes in a box with absolutely nothing in it. Nothing! How embarrassing for a film of this magnitude. There are no extras at all (excluding an ordinary trailer). A film of that sort simply demands a "behind the scenes" and a documentary.
Nevertheless, the quality of the DVD is top notch.
The transfer is very accurate and the colours are extremely balanced and un-saturated in certain scenes. There are no signs of compression or pixelization, even during the dark underwater scenes.
The audio is outstanding. The haunting score which is embedded throughout the movie is more than suitable.
The sound effects department did a brilliant job with the 5.1 version. Titanic hums and buzzs and cracks and the water splash with immense power. The usage of the surround channels is very apparent throughout the movie.
I admit, though - some of the CG scenes are hillarious and the viewer (at least a computer graphics fan, like yours truly) can obviously detect some inaccuracies.
All in all, a must movie on DVD. Don`t rent it - buy it, period.

Titanic is in this reviewer`s opinion the greatest film ever made don`t think this means i love commercial films, i don`t. But in all my years of film watching i have never seen a film which is so simultaneasly ( excuse the spelling) powerful, shocking, uplifting and heartbreaking. The plot and the acting may only be competant but where this film excells is it`s visual magnitude, when that ship sinks your along for the ride! The disk however is a different story, i read somewhere that because of the three hour running time there wasn`t much room for extra`s ( theatrical trailer aside) why then didn`t they take a leaf out of the exorcist`s book and put the extra`s on the other side? The picture is excellent ( although non- anamorphic) and the sound superb it`s just a shame that one of the most highly publicised films of all time has hardly any extra`s, they could have filled the disk three times over!

I`m sorry I just think this film is a total and utter failure.

A disgrace

One of those gloriously over budgetted but under brain powered Hollywood epics that gets people into the cinema. That`s Titanic in a nutshell. One of those films you know you should hate but somehow love. 3 hours goes by in a flash.

The DVD is sadly not up to the promise of the film. Though widescreen, it is shockingly presented in 4:3 letterbox, not anamorphic, which badly compromises the picture when viewed on a large(ish) widescreen TV. Simply not good enough! Even though it is one of the best non-anamorphics I`ve seen.

Sound is superb though, the water lapping around the deck, the creaking and groaning superstructure and the sound of 1500 people in the water all make you feel like reaching for your own life jacket!

Features are non-existent. So much potential missed!

Overall, a good film ruined by a careless transfer (presumably they knew it would sell well regardless) to DVD. Please, please when do we get a 2 (or 3) disc version with a better picture, DTS and bags and bags of extras. I know Cameron has re filmed the wreck (it can`t be for a sequel) so there may be something coming!
