The present recording presents the highly anticipated production of Puccini`s `Turandot`, staged at the fabled Forbidden City of Beijing. It is the first time that Puccini`s Opera which tells the tale of a beautiful Chinese princess and her hapless suitors, has been performed in this authentic setting, an ancestral Ming Dynasty palace.

The site for this `Turandot` production used to be known as The Palace of Heavenly Purity - today it is called the People`s Cultural palace. Between September 5 and 13, 1998, eight open-air performances of Turandot were held in the courtyard of the palace, seating 32,000.
