Your Opinions and Comments
Video: To say the photography in Unbreakable is great is an understatement. It's frickin' perfect. One of the best shot movies ever. This DVD, though not perfect, does the film justice. Blacks and blues (there's an abundance of these folks) are nicely done. There is little sign of edge enhancements or defects, which isn't surprising for a 2000 movie. This film will look great on any display.
Audio: Mostly front stage, but I'm not complaining, this isn't an action movie. The opening train scene is great; it recreates the atmosphere of riding on a train. Dialogue, though very low (this is intentional) is clear. James Newton Howard's score is brilliant. When the film soars, it soars.
Extras: This is quality not quantity. Seven deleted scenes with logical introductions by Shyamalan. They are genuinely interesting additions to the film and are presented in 2.35:1 and 5.1. "Behind The Scenes" are intriguing but short. It is definitely not promo stuff. "Comics Book and Superheroes" is a twenty-minute piece on comic books. A fine piece, it also strays more to cult comics rather than the well-known ones. An early Shyamalan films (total crap) and trailer wraps up the package.
Overall: Tragically underrated film that has a corker of a twist to boot, that is genuinely moving. Shyamalan is fast becoming a fave director of mine and I consider this his best so far. If you haven't seen it please do so now. This is a fine DVD and you should be able to pick it up for cheap. I got mine for €15.
The picture is presented in an Anamorphic Widescreen an is crisp and clear. The colour pallete for most of the movie is limited to dark colours but this we find out in the extras, is intentional. The picture is clean and sharp. Really spot on.
There is a choice of 3 soundtracks, presented in English, French and Italian DD 5.1 The sound is very clear and sharp and well used. The dialogue is very clear and the score is unique and great.
When you read the list of the extras, it does not seem like much but believe me, the stuff that is there is in depth and concise. There is a behind the scenes featurette that is really sort of a making of. It is of reasonable length and worth watching. There are 7 good deleted scenes with an introduction from the director. A comic book/superheroes featurette has lots of different people from the world of comics talk about comic books. This also is of reasonable length and detailed. There is an clip from a childhood film project of the director which features an bunch of kids fighting. Hilarious and laughable when you look at it. There is also a multi angle sequence at the train station. Again, I would have liked to see a commentary from M Night Shyamalan as he has made 3 superb movies and I would like to hear what he has to say.
An excellent movie that is essential viewing and worth owning. A different look at the world of superheroes. A fantastic dvd package.
