Review of Huntress, The Her Name Is Cat

4 / 10

Introduction

The Huntress - Her Name Is Cat is a "stylish action movie" that tells the story of a highly trained assassin in the Hong Kong underworld.

The movie comes from the producer of "Naked Killer" and features "scantily clad, muscular sexy femme fatales" and "ass kickin` insanity".

Or so says the blurb on the back of the box.

Video

The video comes in a choice of the full-frame English version or the anamorphic widescreen Hong Kong version. I watched the anamorphic widescreen version of the film, and had a look at the full-frame version to compare the two.

You probably won`t be surprised to learn that the picture isn`t reference quality - the image is grainy, out of focus and over saturated with colour. Some bizarre camerawork doesn`t help the visuals, and the result is often off-putting.

The visuals consist of action scenes, some dream-like sequences and gratuitous use of slow motion to show off the curves of The Huntress.

Audio

The soundtrack comes in Dolby Digital 2.0 in Cantonese, with a choice of the original or remastered subtitles. Both of these can also be positioned to suit a 4:3 or 16:9 display. As I don`t speak Cantonese, I can`t vouch for the translation, but some of the subtitles are hilarious.

The dialogue comes in a mixture of Cantonese and English, and the English is quite well presented. Sound effects include gunfire, which at times doesn`t seem to be entirely in sync with the guns firing, some cheesy disco music and an amusing "growl" from the Huntress.

Features

The extras aren`t particularly inspiring, consisting of biographies, stills and trailers.

The disc is packaged in a clear Amaray case, which features The Huntress clad in a rather fetching latex bikini and matching thigh-length latex boots. The box contains a single-sided colour insert detailing the twelve chapter breaks.

Conclusion

If you can imagine how bad you`d expect this movie to be, being a Cat III Hong Kong film featuring a scantily clad female assassin, you`ll be please to hear that it will live up (or down) to your expectations.

The film has very little appeal on all fronts - the video isn`t great, the sound isn`t great, the plot is poor, the acting is poor, the action is unconvincing and for those of you hoping for some gratuitous nudity, there`s none - you`re restricted to artsy fartsy clothed slow motion.

In summary, this isn`t even worth renting.
