Review of Ten Years After: Goin` Home

5 / 10

Introduction

When this disc arrived, my expectations were low as this isn`t really the kind of music I listen to nowadays. 70s rock just doesn`t appeal (with a few notable exceptions), so the exploits of Ten Years Later didn`t make me reach for the nearest guitar...

The disc contains 7 tracks from one of their concerts at The Marquee, and not being much of a musical critic myself I am judging this on enjoyment and replay values. From the word go, the tracks are heavy, with few lyrics, and numerous riffs accompanied by frenzied drumming. OK, so it ain`t the worst music to meet the eardrum, but it is miles off from being something original. Each track has its moments, but they soon get repetitive and ultimately, tiresome.

Video

The disc arrives with a 1.33:1 Standard Fullscreen transfer, which is satisfactory considering you will be listening harder than watching. The palette is restricted however, with `durgy` visuals. There are no compression signs, but the print does lack.

On-stage antics aren`t anything controversial, so there is no necessity to keep your eyes permanently on the screen. However, a better print should have been provided, but considering this is fairly old, most people won`t mind.

Audio

A DD 2.0 track is on offer here, and every twang of a string and boom from the drumkit is presented well. Vocals are also played well, and bass and treble levels are just right.

All 7 tracks demand good sound, so thankfully the crisp audio does provide.

Features

A 6min behind the scenes and set lists are on offer. The fly-on-the-wall featurette is lacking any depth, and at a mere 6mins is a waste of effort. The visuals are incredibly poor, and a stuck-up `band-aid` saying how you get to smoke the best dope when you`re a rock star isn`t the best way to promote the disc. The menus are animated well though, with good sound clips and menu structure. The set lists are the standard affair, offering you access to each song.

The extras aren`t the most important thing on this type of disc, but some effort has to be made, and you get the impression that not much effort has been put into this disc.

Conclusion

Worth buying if you`re a die-hard fan, but people looking for a decent music DVD look elsewhere. This is showing its age, and repetitive songs and a lacklustre disc do nothing but decrease the value of this disc.

It had promise, but when push comes to shove, you aren`t going to be in a hurry to reload the disc after the first viewing.
