Synopsis:
Rookie cop Jake Hoyt wants to stop crooks, not become one. But staying on the right side of the line that separates cop from criminal will be more challenging than anything he`s faced. Because Hoyt`s senior partner for the next 24 hours is Alonzo Harris, an undercover narc meaner than any of L.A.`s mean streets.

In a powerful departure from his frequent good-guy roles, Denzel Washington plays Harris, the twisted but charismatic detective who both attracts and repels as he becomes the kind of thug he`s supposed to collar. Ethan Hawke plays unseasoned recruit Hoyt. And Antoine Fuqua (The Replacement Killers, Bait) directs, guiding a cast that includes music stars Dr. Dre, Macy Gray and Snoop Dogg. Training Day. Oh, my God. Hawke being nominated best supporting actor for this? And Washington actually winning best actor? What was the Academy thinking? Being politically correct? Come on! This has got to be one of Washington`s worst performances (and he`s a great actor). Of course Washington isn`t entirely to blame, since the script is boring and quite shallow.
The video transfer is good. There are no compression signs and the dark scenes are rendered nicely.
The DD 5.1 soundtrack is ok. The surrounds are used during the action scenes quite effectively.
The menus are still with sound.
The extras include a commentary, a behind the scenes look, 3 deleted scenes (including an alternate ending) and 2 horrible music videos.
Bottom line - a really dull and ordinary thriller that fails to deliver and is not worthy of even mentioning the word "Oscar" with it.

Feature:

Training Day surprised me in the fact that it was good. Films like this sometimes turn out very bad, especially if people like Snoop Dog and Dr Dre are credited. Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke are brilliant, with Washington bagging an oscar for his work. Scott Glen is also good, but you come to expect it from an actor like him. Though Director Antione Fuqua has produced a great cop film in which police corruption comes to the forecourt. Also the script is great, David Ayer could go on to do well in Hollywood.

Sound:

A great Dolby Digital 5.1 mix, that showcases the brutal action well.

Picture:

A great picture transfer again from Warner Bros.

Extras:

A good selection of features. A good Commentary from Fuqua. The alternate ending has little difference and the additional scenes again have little meaning and don`t really need a second viewing. The Documenatry by HBO is really good and enjoyable, and there are the crap music videos and trailers that round the package up.
