Review of Mikey and Nicky

1 / 10

Introduction

This seventies gangsters tale explores the friendship and lives of 2 gangsters, Mikey and Nicky. There`s a contract out on Nicky so he turns to his only friend, Mikey, for help. It`s a tale of paranoia and betrayal as Nicky doesn`t know who to trust. Can his lifelong friend be the trigger man he`s been dreading?

Video

The picture is full frame and quite frankly dreadful. Grain and print dirt is everywhere whilst the colours are faded and look very dated. Along with the awful quality there are also some truly with many shots being badly out of focus or shaky.

The box claims this is the restored print. Looks to me like it`s been restored from the rubbish bin, quite literally.

Audio

This is, beyond doubt, the WORST soundtrack I have ever heard on a DVD. Whist it claims to be a Dolby Digital Stereo 2.0 affair what you actually get is some sort of weird stereo effort. The weirdness is that the speech seems comes solely from the left speaker whilst all other sound seems to be confined to the right. Fiddling with my amplifier and removing and surround decoding still left me with the same confusing stereo output.

That aside the quality of the sound is appalling. Everything sounds muffled with allot of background hissing.

Features

The extras on show here are some biographies and an extremely dull slideshow made up of various uninteresting black and white stills. The DVD box makes mention of a trailer as well but I was unable to find it.

Conclusion

DVD has truly brought the cinema into our living rooms. With top quality images and engrossing sound the whole experience of watching a movie at home has benefited immensely. This disc manages to achieve the exact opposite and ruins what might have, at one time, been an enjoyably movie.

The simply dreadful quality detracts massively from the movie to the point where I was distracted throughout ruining any enjoyment I might have had watching it. This disc has the honour of being the worst quality I have yet seen, and I sincerely hope that it`s never beaten.
