Tombstone (UK)

A cracking film, on yet another poor disc. Val Kilmer steals every scene that he's in as Doc Holliday and the rest of the cast including Kurt Russell are pretty good as well.

It's just a shame about the disc… the video transfer is OK… audio we only get Dolby Pro Logic which doesn't really take full advantage of the action… and extras…? Well, we get a trailer, and an extended trailer, sorry - a "Making Of Featurette" which is only 5 minutes long and pretty poor.

Overall a great film, but it's probably best to go for the R1 Vista Series version which boasts a few more extras (including director's commentary) as well as a DD5.1 soundtrack.

One of the best modern westerns! I saw this movie for the first time recently and it definetly is one of if not the best modern western. Somehow, no matter how much effort is put into it, modern westerns are just not as good as they used to be. This is a great effort and perhaps the closest to the classic pre 80`s westerns.

Wyatt Earp(Kurt Russell) and his 2 brothers come to Tombstone leaving all their fighting days behind them. They only want to settle down and make money. However, there is a cowboy gang who terrorise this small town and soon the Earps get involved and Wyatt is forced to pick up his guns once again. He is also joined by his good friend Doc Holiday(Excellently portrayed by Val Kilmer). This movie is a star studded extravaganza and also features great performances from Sam Neill, Bill Paxton and the great Charlton Heston.

The movie whilst it was great, just didnt feel like a 100% authentic western. Maybe it was all the black clothes, or the moustaches or the soundtrack.The movie came at a time when the western genre was attempted to be revitalised (The quick and the dead, Unforgiven, Wyatt Earp) and is better than all of them.

The picture quality and sound were a bit lacklustre. For a big budget 90`s movie, you would atleast expect a clear sharp picture and a DD 5.1 soundtrack but the picture is at times grainy and lacking sharpness and sound is a mere DD 2.0.
There is a definite lack of extra material and that put together with the dodgyish picture and mediocre sound, one might think that this disc was rushed. There are no english subtitles which in my opinion should be made standard. There is only a trailer and short making of featurette which shows some behind the scenes stuff but lacks depth.

A very good movie that just didnt grab me as a movie I want to own. It is definetly worth a rental and if you like it, there is a far superior R1 vista series edition.
