Review of Emmanuelle 4

4 / 10

Introduction

As I said in my review of Emmanuelle 2, this series of movies will be familiar to all those who as teenagers spotted the movies on late night television and stayed up to watch the films to ogle at the naked women and watch the sex. It`s the sort of thing you might find on Channel 4 or Channel 5 in the early hours.

This time, "Emmanuelle`s quest for sexual fulfilment" takes her to Brazil, where she undergoes plastic surgery to become a younger and more beautiful goddess (i.e. in order to attract viewers to a fourth movie in the saga, someone younger and more attractive was required). Obviously she then goes about sleeping with numerous men and women…

Video

By the time this series had reached number four, it was well into straight-to-video territory, which is reflected in the full-frame video (interestingly, before the feature, there is an old looking Dolby trailer which I haven`t seen before which is in 16:9 anamorphic widescreen), which is grainier, dirtier and less crisp than the second instalment.

Again, the primary reason that most people will watch these movies is nudity and sex - and there is of course plenty which as ever contains both hetero and lesbian action for you to enjoy. The 18 certificate that the movie has obviously restricts what you`re going to see, and you`re limited to full frontal nudity and sex scenes with carefully arranged camera angles.

Audio

The soundtrack comes in Dolby Digital 2.0 and like the previous movie is functional - with the music and dialogue presented competently.

Again, the dialogue comes in a choice of languages, I chose the original French language with English subtitles - there is also dubbed English available for those who prefer. I personally detest dubbed soundtracks but a lot of people don`t like subtitles - just as well the emphasis here is on visuals not dialogue.

Features

The only extra on offer is the trailer.

Conclusion

Whereas the second movie is a well made, if dull erotic movie, this fourth one is a dull erotic movie that isn`t particularly well made and demonstrates that the series was well by it`s sell-by date (and they`re still making them now - there were two Emmanuelle films made in 2000).

As I said before, personal preference for erotic movies will determine whether you choose Emmanuelle over other forms of "late-night entertainment" - this particular example isn`t particularly inspiring.

The video and sound are both average, and there are no special features - on the plus side, the suggested retail price is a low £9.99.
