Synopsis:
The terrorist Abrush (Danny) kidnaps the Indian minister Mishra Ji (Govind Namdeo). Abrush then tries to negotiate a deal with Colonel Hussain (Om Puri), a renowned soldier known of his patriotism. However Col. Hussain decides to send his best squad to infiltrate the camp Abrush was hiding with Mishra. Heading the team for this mission is Major Jaidev Rajwansh (Anil Kapoor), another soldier who is a true patriot at heart and soul.

The mission becomes successful as Major Jaidev manages to catch Abrush, destroys his camp and rescues the minister. He is declared a national hero for succeeding and is given leave. Jaidev returns home to his mother and his father, a retired army officer. Next door to him lives Anjali (Madhuri Dixit), his childhood friend although he doesn`t know that Anjali loves him.

At a party Jaidev meets and falls in love with Pooja (Namrata Shirodkar) who is also from a military background. As time goes by both are getting along well. Jaidev tells Anjali that he wants to marry Pooja, but Anjali, much against this, wants Jaidev to marry her and tells Jaidev this. Jaidev as a result of this news rejects her and Anjali becomes wounded.

Abrush men see this opportunity to get their leader free from the army. They persuade Anjali to find out the code number that is within Jaidev`s possession. They tell her that if she does this then Jaidev will be suspended from the army for a couple of days then Pooja will leave him as a result of that and that she could gain his love back. What they don`t tell her is that the code would lead them to the details of Abrush whereabouts. She gives them the code in order to get Jaidev.

Abrush is freed from the clutches of the army, and Jaidev is suspected of being part of his clan. This gives him a dark name in the army and is suspended for good. This hurts the honour of Jaidev and his family, as everyone is branding them traitors. Jaidev becomes more broken when Pooja leaves him. Seeing this also hurts Anjali who is afraid to tell about her part in this. What happens next forms the crux of the story...
