Synopsis:
Sethu (Kamal Hassan), a dancer teacher & Rajni (Rekha), a young woman from a wealthy family, are enjoying their last moments together before they take their journey to the after life, by commit suicide. Rajni parents do not approve of Sethu as he is considered to be of ‘low class.’ Sethu tried all ways to get her parents approval, but her stubborn father Madhlia would rather kill Rajni then have Sethu as a son-in-law. Seeing no alternative the couple decide to spend their last day together, by making love, and being happy together.

When the time comes both hold hand and jump of a high cliff but a tree branch miraculously saves Sethu while falling, and Rajni plummets to a violent death. When Sethu sees Rajni die in front of him he is shattered. The police arrive at the scene and arrest Sethu for attempted suicide.

His Uncle, Chaplin Chellappa (Kamal Hassan), a full time comic imitator of Charlie Chaplin & drunken father Muthuappa, is shocked to hear Sethu attempting to kill himself. Both do what they can to get him out on bail. However the court sentences Sethu to one-year imprisonment & Madhlia vows revenge on the shame Sethu has brought onto his family.

One year passes, and Sethu is released out of prison still trying to cope with life without Rajni. His old employer, and friend Padmini (Srivitheva), hires him back to run her dancing school. There he encounters a new student Malini (Revathi), a young woman who begins to have a crush on Sethu. When Sethu tells her to back away she becomes more determined to have his love. In the end Sethu falls and he begins a new love affair with Malini.

But this will be another trying time for Sethu, as Malini parents do not approve of Sethu. Fate seems to have a bad sense of humour…
