Review of Black Beauty

8 / 10

Introduction

The classic novel got the film treatment with great results back in 1971. With a top notch cast list this movie is probably now as much of a classic as the book itself.

Video

The picture is vivid and clear giving it a newer look that belies its age. Blacks are black throughout but the whites did tend to give slight halos. This incidental misgiving does not distract from what is a superb transfer from Metrodome.

Audio

A strong, clean crisp sound if only in 2.0 mono. There`s a slight amount of distortion on the strident music score which comes across as a little harsh.

Features

A neat bunch of trailers, behind the scenes stills and poster designs (even one for a Japanese release).

Conclusion

A quaint little film that is just a charm to watch. I`m always disappointed it doesn`t have the now well known TV theme tune but this Black Beauty DVD is a beauty.
