Your Opinions and Comments
as a masterpiece,It went to be nominated for 8 Oscars, and ended up winning for cinematography and sound.
Now 22 years later,an additional 49 minutes has been added.
The new scenes include the stealing of Kilgore`s surfboard,a
lengthy French Plantation sequence, more Playboy bunnie
footage, and more scenes. All this add ups to the definite version of Coppola`s masterpiece.
Paramount presents "Redux" in 2.00:1 anamorphic widescreen, instead of it`s original aspect ratio of 2.35:1.That
aside, this is a beautiful new transfer with close to no defects.
This new version uses Technicolor Dye Transfer Prints, which
gives the film very rich colors, and they look shockingly good.
The 5.1 surround track on this disc is just as impressive,as it
remains very aggresive and engaging throughout. The helicopter attack sequence sounds especially awesome, with
Wagner`s "Ride of the Valkyries" put to great use.
Sadly, the only extra to be found is the theatrical trailer that
doesn`t use dye transfer prints.Paramount should released this movie as a 2-disc set with a commentary track and documentaries.Hopefully Criterion will re-release this movie.
Despite the lack of the extras, both the video and audio are awesome, and this disc gets my recommendation, because
"Redux" is a must-see movie.
"Saigon… s***, I'm still only in Saigon…"
If you're a movie fan... buy this DVD! If you're a movie lover... buy this DVD! If you have any sense of cinema history, art, or politics, buy this DVD! It will challenge you, entertain you, and provide you hours (and that's in just one sitting) of enjoyment. "Apocalypse Now Redux" is slow (In comparison to the original which moves along pretty well), and frustrating. With so many people working at the top of their game however, it's a film, which will live side by side with the original as an even greater example of too much money, too much time, too much waste, yet still, on the other side - genius.
By making "Apocalypse Now Redux" Coppola has stepped back from his recent work and acknowledged this as a completely different film. It's mood, tone and structure are different then "Apocalypse Now". If nothing else, he is to be applauded for that recognition of himself as a different filmmaker and "Apocalypse Now Redux" a different film.
If you want to see one of the greatest movies ever made, in the way it was meant to be seen, then "Apocalypse Now Redux" is the way to do it.
