Review for WWE Night of Champions 2014
I usually review Night of Champions complaining about how it doesn't even follow the format and maybe someone in WWE was listening. Every championship match is represented (as it should be) and this made every match and every title feel like they meant something. This is the first time in a while I've seen all the titles defended on a PPV and this is exactly how every PPV should be.
WWE Tag Championship match between The Usos and Goldust/Stardust is a wonderful way to start the PPV and I feel like The Usos have easily made it as my tag team of the year, but I do love the new dynamic of Goldust/Stardust and both work so well together. This is followed by a brutally wonderful match between Sheamus and Cesaro for the US Championship. Sadly, I can't say the same for the adequate match between Dolph Ziggler and The Miz for the
Intercontinental Championship. The match was fine in general, but just unmemorable, unlike the previous two.
Seth Rollins against... well no one (due to scheduled opponent Roman Reigns being injured) , was possibly the most pointless segment. I could understand if they were using it as a way of saving time and even the appearance of Dean Ambrose and the general brawling couldn't save it. This was followed by the jingoistic match between Mark Henry and Rusev. I don't think I can say anymore about the story and so all I will say is that the match was boring and lumbering and that's not a good thing. Though at least they have stopped the painful (if sexy) promos by Lana.
Chris Jericho against Randy Orton is a good match, but for these two I should be saying more than that. The match just existed and unlike Jericho's amazing feud with Bray Wyatt, this match just existed.
But that can't be said about the surprising Divas Triple Threat between Nikki Bella, AJ Lee and champion Paige. I expected this to be an awkward mess, but it's not. Not only do I get to enjoy looking at three of the hottest divas in the WWE, but they all worked really well together. And the powerbomb/superplex was amazing and certainly not something I expected in a divas match.
After Summerslam's unbelievably boring match between Lesnar and Cena I had no expectations for this match. As I said last time, that match would have been better with a stipulation (I Quit, Last Man Standing etc) and I feel the same about this match. This match was better, but still so very boring. I get it, Lesnar is a monster and Cena will never give up, but this match was almost a carbon copy of the previous match and that's certainly not something to aim to achieve.
The worst thing is that this went on for nearly thirty minutes. I sat there for almost thirty minutes just wanting the match the end. That is not a good sign and even the surprise at the end did not make any difference. You hear those boos WWE? That is thousands of unhappy fans. That is millions of fans not subscribing to the WWE Network.
Extras include interviews with AJ Lee and with Stardust and Goldust which are fine, plus a Peep Show with Christian and Chris Jericho. All these features are fine, though I do wish they would include the Kickoff show in full and this is something that the other PPVs should do.
Night of Champions could have been a great PPV and in some ways it was. If you forget about the main matches and focus on the belts that are usually forgotten (Tag, US, IC and Divas) it was a great PPV with possibly the best Divas match I've seen in a long time. It is just a shame that the main event was just pointless and boring and unless WWE do something to build a credible threat to Brock Lesnar it will continue.
