Synopsis:
Director Lance Comfort is one of British cinema's most prolific and versatile yet critically neglected figures, whose body of work – largely consisting of tightly scheduled B-movies – has undergone re-appraisal only relatively recently. Presented here in a brand-new transfer from the original film elements, this compelling and atmospheric crime drama showcases Comfort's typically innovative style, adopting a child's-eye view of a murder investigation in which an innocent man's life hangs in the balance.
Two boys are playing in a wood. The younger boy has found a revolver and, not understanding that the gun differs from his toy pistol, plays 'highwayman' on the road. He holds up a cyclist and the gun goes off, killing the cyclist. Both boys are unaware of the tragic consequences of their game, while the body and the gun are soon found by Bob Carter, who had recently quarrelled with the victim in the presence of workmates and uttered threats against him. The evidence seems damning, and Bob is arrested for murder.
