Synopsis:
David Alden's witty and sensual production of Handel's last italian opera is a bold reclamation of a hitherto-neglected work. In an internecine Greek political struggle before the Trojan war, military glory crushes personal fulfilment, embodied by Deidamia's journey from holiday girl to tragic heroine. Sally Matthews gives 'a captivating performance' in the lead role, combining 'vocal acrobatics with physical ones', (New York Times), and she is complemented by a cast of Baroque opera stars and one of Europe's most dynamic period-instrument orchestras.
