Review for WWE Superstars Collection John Cena
It doesn't matter what you think of John Cena, you have to admit there is no bigger star in wrestling today. I'm not a huge fan, but I have to admit as a person he seems a nice guy, as a wrestler... I've seen better, but I have seen much, much worse and on a good day, with the right person John Cena can be just as good as anyone.
This set is a bizarre four match set (See WWE Superstars Randy Orton DVD) which does not focus on one year or storyline, but just picks out four random matches over a four year span. Specifically from 2008, 2009 and 2011.
I have often said that it would be great if you could request DVDs from WWE. Having such a large tape collection you could say charge £20 and have a custom made four/five match set. It might be the only way I ever get a British Bulldogs DVD. This is what it feels like. It feels like a random John Cena fan has picked out four random matches from a list of a hundred, slapped it on a disk and released it.
And what matches are they? First up we have Cena against Chris Jericho at Armageddon 2008. Ok, so you got me. I could watch any Jericho match and always enjoy it. This is a pretty good match and though I couldn't remember the ending (I'll get to that in a second), it was pretty good. Following this we have a triple threat between Cena, Shawn Michaels and Triple H from Survivor Series 2009. Ok, you got me again. All three are amazing in this match, Triple H and HBK are as good as they ever were and Cena with this dynamic is pretty solid in what he brings to the table too.
Next up a match from Raw against Randy Orton from 2009? Bravo DVD. Just when I thought you would pitch me a perfect set of matches, you go and throw Orton into the mix. This is fine for a TV match, but not one I would actively watch again. The set finishes with a triple threat (another one?) in a steel cage against John Morrison and The Miz from Extreme Rules 2011. OK, three for four. I actually didn't remember this match at all and I enjoyed it immensely. All three worked well together and though I think having this in a cage was a bit of an overkill it certainly didn't hurt the match at all.
What did hurt the match, and hurts all of the matches is that you know the outcome to them all. Now I know that is obvious, because you wouldn't include a match of John Cena losing on a John Cena set, but it does take you out of the enjoyment a little bit. That being said, I can't help but say that if these matches (bar the random one against Orton) had been on any Cena set I'd be happy to watch them again and watching back I did enjoy them despite the predictable outcomes to them all.
However, with only four matches and only over nintey minutes of action, this does feel like a waste of a DVD that could easily hold another hour of footage before you would have to worry about disk space. This does make it feel like a shameless cash in, aimed at those diehard Cena fans that will buy anything with his face on it.
Despite that, if you are a fan of Cena and you just want to watch a couple of good matches then this is a good set, if you a Cena-Hater who doesn't think he can wrestle, this might also change that opinion as he is pretty good throughout. But if you are looking for a good set on Cena, I would suggest his previous one as it is more value for money.
