Review for WWE Best PPV Matches of 2011
This is fourtee of the best matches that WWE have presented across their PPVs in 2011. Every PPV is represented (except Survivor Series, Over the Limit and TLC). I often think that it would be better for WWE to not release their PPVs on DVD over the year and instead opt for a 'Best of' of this kind at the end of the year, however I can understand why they still do it.
Most of the matches are either WWE or World Heavyweight Championship matches, with eight of these matches here and six which do not involve these titles. Also included is an Elimination Chamber match, a Money in the Bank and the wonderful Triple H vs The Undertaker match at Wrestlemania.
It is odd that WWE can distill their yearly product of PPVs into only fourteen matches and it does make you wonder what they missed out. Glancing at the list, most of the main players are represented here including Edge's final two PPV matches before he retired, Randy Orton, Mark Henry, John Cena a returning Triple H and Undertaker and of course the talk of 2011: CM Punk.
If I was to nitpick I would say that the lack of tag matches or Intercontinental or US Title matches is a bit wrong and having one Divas match is fine, but only highlights just how weak their division is. This lack of focus on the lower and midcard proves just how weak the whole company feels at the moment with so much emphasis on the main eventers and nothing else. It seems that the only way that they can get onto a match is if it is a multi-man match like Money in the Bank.
2011 saw the push of many stars to the main event with Christian and CM Punk soldifying themselves as the new top guys in the company. CM Punk's year has been phenomenal and although I would say that the whole 'Money in the Bank' shoot angle was great at the time, in hindsight I do feel that WWE rushed that so much that I doubt in the long run anyone will remember it. However, the match between Punk and Cena is a genuine FIVE STAR CLASSIC and will be a match that will be in Top Ten lists in years to come.
There are no duff matches here and none that I can remember that are missing. I would have liked to have seen more vignettes and highlight packages, but seeing Punk's shoot promo again was great and certainly one of my highlights of the year.
2011 was a topsy turvy year for WWE. At times I felt they turned the corner in terms of quality, but when I look back I see that for most of the year I was seeing the same people over and over and over again.
In 2012 it would be nice to see some more stars being elevated and I'm sure we will be seeing a lot of Daniel Bryan an Chris Jericho too. All in all this is a great set and certainly a good way to remember the year in WWE.
