Review for Margaret Cho - Beautiful

8 / 10

Introduction

Margaret Cho has done a lot. You might think that you don't know her, but you probably do. She was in Face/Off, TV series such as Drop Dead Diva, Ghost Whisperer and All-American Girl. And she's also been performing stand up for over 15 years, which is where you may also know her from.

Beautiful was her 2008 show, shot at the Long Beach Terrace Theatre in California, and explores the good, bad, and downright ugly in beauty, and the unattractive politicians and marketers who shape our world.

Conclusion

This show is not for the faint of heart. Cho is lewd, rude and crude, and refers to a lot of personal and intimate information about her life. This is not one to be watching with the family on Christmas Day.

There's good old-fashioned, unadulerated filth on offer here, and this is probably the rudest set I've seen in a while. But most of it has a point. She is bisexual and has a lot to say about both sexes. There are plenty of political references in here too (she was violently anti-George Bush, but is conflicted about Sarah Palin - hates her politics, wants to get into her pants).

The only part that doesn't really work (and the same was true of her Edinburgh show this year) is the singing bit.

A funny show, a rude show, and one that will probably offend a lot of people. If you stumble across this one by accident, you might get a shock, but if you know Margaret Cho and her work then you'll enjoy a funny 90 minutes, along with some awkward moments.
