The Velour Fog...

Introduction

Geeky Tobe Hulbert's (newcomer Dustin Ingram) life sucks. A recent high-school graduate living in Washington with his grandfather, he works out of a vintage hot dog truck, and his only friend is his overweight 12-year-old neighbour. In the dog-days of summer, his only escape is obsessively watching videos of his fantasy girl, 1980's adult film star Monica Velour (Kim Cattrall).



Tobe sets off on a life-changing road trip as he travels across the state to meet Monica Velour, the woman of his dreams, at a rare live appearance hundreds of miles away. Expecting his fantasy, Tobe is instead confronted with a harsh reality: Monica is a 49-year-old mum who lives in a trailer park in rural Indiana, and her life is nothing like he imagined it would be. The last thing Monica needs is another complication in her life, but Tobe is determined to do whatever it takes to get close to her...

Everything ok here, a nice representation of the 1930s jazz soundtrack, and everything about the film looks just right.

Conclusion

I don't watch Sex & The City, so I've largely avoided Kim Cattrall in recent years. Based on this evidence, that's probably a shame, but you still won't find me buying any SATC box sets (apart from as presents for my sister-in-law).



This is a fun and quirky comedy that is reminiscent of some of those good old fashioned 1980s teen comedies (but not in a bad way). There's drama in here too and it has a lot to say about how people over a certain age are viewed. It doesn't resort to loads of cheap gross-out gags (there are a few risque moments, but no more), and is worth watching for Cattrall's performance as the washed up star of so many worn-out VHS tapes.

It's a slow burner but it's definitely worth watching.
