Review for Rey Mysterio: The Life of a Masked Man
Rey Mysterio is one of the most popular WWE superstars of all time. Appearing in ECW, WCW and WWE, he has done it all and faced them all. Looking at the people he has faced it is almost a who's who or icons and legends in the business. Despite Rey often giving up a foot in height and sometimes hundreds of pounds in weight, he stood toe to toe with the best and his unique style gave him an edge that many underestimated.
The DVD is a nice mix of documentary and stories with matches that cobvers over eight hours of footage. The stories cover most aspects of Rey's career, though if you are after an indepth look at this I would recommend getting his previous DVD. I don't usually enjoy these story-match-story sets, but this one worked really well. It flowed easy and as long as you are not after a definitive history of Mysterio this is a great overview of his career with some fascinating stories about his mask, time in WCW and ECW, Eddie Guerrero and much more.
Of the 28 matches many are not from PPVs and so there are a lot of matches on here that you may not have seen or may not have remembered. At times this is great, though I do wish they had included more PPV matches as they always felt more special. The set includes two from ECW and six from WCW which is nice, though many of the matches have very little significance and seem to just be included because of who he is against, rather than the quality of the match.
One of the fascinating things about this set is watching Rey wrestle someone like Eddie Guerrero or Chris Jericho in WCW and then again almost a decade later in WWE. It is almost like watching the evolution of the performers and anyone who thinks that Rey hasn't earned his spot in the business really needs to look at how he is able to adpat his style to so many different people. To watch him against CM Punk and the Batista it is great to see how he adapts his style and it makes watching Rey a lot more interesting than a wrestlerw ho simply does the same match over and over again.
There are no matches missing that I can think of (though some more from WCW would have been nice). The only notable absences, were that only one of his matches were he won the world title is included, which is a little odd. It would have been nice if they had also included his Royal Rumble victory as it was definitely one of the best Rumble performances by anyone.
This is an excellent set for Rey Mysterio fans. I'm not a huge Mysterio fan, but even I enjoyed watching him and much like I did with the John Cena DVD, I gained a lot more respect for him as a person and a performer. The set is filled with many matches you may not have seen and many that you will want to rewatch and with all this his place in WWE's Hall of Fame is guaranteed.
