Review for Wrestlemania 27

Wrestlemania should be the best PPV of the WWE calendar. You all know that I think it's the Royal Rumble, but Wrestlemania has got to the point of being considered the pinnacle of a career. If you headline a Wrestlemania or even appear that is you etched in history forever.

This year? I don't know. Maybe I'm getting cynical after all these years, but this just felt like any other WWE PPV from the year. Same people in the matches, same results and the same experience.

The main hook for this year was that the event was hosted by WWE Legend and guaranteed Hall of Famer The Rock. The problem with this is there was never an explanation as to what 'hosting' actually meant and after the past few years of the Raw Guest Hosts it didn't fill me with a whole load of confidence.

As for the matches? Looking through them, of the eight matches I honestly only enjoyed a few of them. Most were throwaway and even the mega hype of Michael Cole vs. Jerry Lawler (which overshadowed every other match) was let down by it being essentially an awful, awful match.

Rey Mysterio vs. 'Dashing' Cody Rhodes was fine, but nothing spectacular, Kane, Big Show, Santino and Kofi Kingston vs. The Corre was a waste of time and the match that pitted Dolph Ziggler and Lay-Cool vs. John Morrison, Trish Stratus and Jersey Shore's Snooki was painfully bad.

The two title matches are fine, though both are completely forgettable and even The Rock's involvement in The Miz vs. John Cena was not as great as I'm sure they expected it to be. As for Edge's elbow onto the car roof? I don't know what to say?

For me the two highlights of the PPV were CM Punk vs. Randy Orton and The Undertaker vs. Triple H. Punk and Orton had some great moments and anyone able to make me want to watch a Randy Orton match is doing something right in my book. The obvious match of the night was The Undertaker vs. Triple H which (despite being crippled by 'The Streak') was a great back and forth match and a great comeback for both of them.

The Rock's hosting involved a fine opening section which punched all the usual Rock catchphrases and would have been a fine way to start the show if it didn't go on for so long. It did feel like it went on forever. His interactions with Eve, Mean Gene and Pee Wee Herman was painfully bad and his interaction with Stone Cold should have been epic, should have hinted at maybe 'one more round'. Instead it was just a wasted opportunity. As for his involvement in the final match... I've never been so happy and disappointed in a long time.
The DVD set comes with the full Hall of Fame ceremony which features the inductions of Shawn Michaels (Agree), The Road Warriors (Agree), Sunny (Agree), Abdullah the Butcher (Agree), Hacksaw Jim Duggan (Somewhat agree), Bullet Bob Armstrong (Not in the slightest) and Drew Carey (WHY?).

The ceremony is great, though I do wish they had included a match or something from each person to explain why they are in there. As you can see, most I agree with, but the last two again make the Hall of Fame seem a joke.

Also included is the United States Championship match between Daniel Bryan and Sheamus. This is sad, as it's actually better than most of the matches that actually made the PPV. There is also an odd vignette explaining the history between Edge and Alberto Del Rio and more or less proves that there isn't any and if he hadn't won the Rumble, this match would not be happening.

One of the most bizarre, yet still enjoyable extras is 'WWE's Legendary Moments'. It is bizarre because although some of the moments come from Wrestlemania, not all of them do and so I have no idea what the feature is doing here. It also doesn't include any moments before 1998? Amongst the 'moments' are DX's invasion of WCW, Mankind and The Rock's This is Your Life, Austin's Beerbath, Kane unmasking, Chris Jericho's debut, HBK's retirement amongst others. Though this is a nice list it really doesn't belong on this set and maybe if they had just cut it to include only the Wrestlemania ones it would make sense. However, for an overview of the WWE since 1998 it is enjoyable enough.

Wrestlemania 27 was a good, if a little underwhelming PPV. It didn't have the same impact as previous events, but I think I just expected too much. Wrestlemania should be the best that WWE has to offer, but if this is it, I'm not sure if the WWE really has anything to offer at the moment. However if you are a fan of The Undertaker, this is once again proof of just how good he can be!
