Review for WWE Live in the UK: April 2011
Every time WWE releases this I say the same thing 'If you were there it is a nice memento. If you were not it's probably a few good matches taken out of context and with no point whatsoever.' I understand why they release them, but unlike the UK PPVs they used to have, these events are sometimes hard to watch because they are essentially just random WWE shows. They feel like if you recorded a random week of WWE TV and then re-watched them a few months later... maybe because that's essentially what I am doing.
The set includes the Raw, Smackdown, Superstars and NXT filmed in the UK. Each show has its moments, but I do wish they would just edit the shows and include only the great matches. I say this, because I really did not want to relive the awfulness of Michael Cole being knighted, the horrible NXT show and the endless vignettes that went through these shows. That being said there are some highlights.
From Raw we have the tribute to Edge which is nice and we also have CM Punk vs. Randy Orton, which is probably the best match on the set and it is a shame that they didn't carry this feud on longer. The Miz and Alex Riley vs. John Cena and Sin Cara was fine, though for a debut it would have made more sense for Sin Cara to be a singles match, especially as no one in this match gelled with Sin Cara's unique style. R-Truth vs. John Morrison was also a very good match and a great jumpstart to the R-Truth character.
Smackdown is just a mess with a variety of awful segments with a few matches spliced in. Wade Barrett vs. Kofi Kingston is fine, Cody Rhodes vs. Rey Mysterio is also fine and the best match was a tag match between Justin Gabriel & Heath Slater against Kane and Big Show.
As for NXT and Superstars? Both shows have nothing worth watching again and I do wish they would stop including them.
As with all the Live UK DVDs, there is one match included from a previous UK PPV. This one from Rebellion 2001 between Edge and Christian is great. The problem is it is the best match on the whole set. A match almost ten years old is better than four shows worth of WWE programming?
WWE Live in the UK: April 2011 is not a great set by any means. I hate to repeat myself, but If you were there it is a nice memento. If you were not it's probably a few good matches taken out of context and with no point whatsoever. I do hope that someone takes note of this and starts thinking about either axing this release or at least editing it to just the best bits, what there are of them!
