Review for Superjail

2 / 10

Do not eat while watching this show! In fact, just don't watch it at all. Over the years, I have gotten used to 'adult cartoons' and the limits that they like to go to such as Monkey Dust or even things like Family Guy and South Park, but Superjail takes this to a whole new low that even I didn't think was possible!
Set in the eponymously named Superjail, the cartoon shows the inside of a prison that seems to be what would happen if David Lynch and David Cronenberg got together with Tim Burton and Terry Gilliam and was asked to design somewhere to put prisoners. I'm not sure what the creators were on when they designed this, but it wasn't healthy whatever it was. Ran by 'The Warden' who looks more like Willy Wonka and inhabited by a variety of criminals, including Jacknife who is a perpetual escapee, Gary a mute who is accompanied by a canary amongst others. The plots are pointlessly simplistic, most involving every cliché prison story you have heard and are top and tailed by the capture and escape of Jacknife from the prison.
The style and animation reminds me of the old Quentin Blake illustrations from the Roald Dahl books and I think that's what makes the unrelentless gore, violence and nonsense have even more or a negative effect. I didn't enjoy watching this show. I'm not saying that as a prude, who doesn't like violence. I can sit through any horror, slasher you would like to put me in front of, but there has to be some feeling of story, character or even entertainment for me to do this and enjoy it. Though only ten episodes were created (Eleven if you include the Pilot), you wonder who commissioned this? Who actually sat there and said 'Yes, this is what people will want to watch.'?
The extras would be fine, if I could find them and I must say that this DVD has the worst designed Menu in the history of DVD. Screens consist of tattoos or graffiti in which muddled in with all that are your options, but you will have to either have super eyesight or go up to the screen to check what you are pressing. Included is the Original Pilot, which is just as bad as the rest of them, Animatics for the Pilot and episodes 1, 9 and 10 and a music video. There are no commentaries, interviews or anything to reveal the sick twisted minds behind all this or to tell me exactly what they were thinking.
I didn't enjoy Superjail! I found nothing super about it and cannot imagine the type of people who would actually call this entertainment!
