Review of Free Enterprise
Introduction
Did I really want to see this?
We ‘no’ actually, however was I pleasantly surprised when I gave it a go. :-)
I had fears of this film being little more then a sorry homage to sci-fi fans and little else and sure enough you get a lot of just that in it, but it’s all fairly affectionate and in the same vein as films like Mallrats, Clerks etc. The film does not take itself to seriously and it’s quite refreshing to see Shatner poking fun at himself.
The plot is basically little more then a fast talking romantic comedy and should appeal if your a fan of films like ‘High Fidelity’ etc.
Video
The disk is Anamorphic and the video quality is above average if not outstanding and there is little evidence of any major problems with the print. Overall, more then adequate for this disk.
Audio
Audio is a Dolby Pro-Logic affair with a reasonable sound stage throughout, the film is most dialog driven and the audio reflects that.
The lack of a 5.1 audio track on a film this new is concerning but not a real problem.
Features
This disk actually comes with a fair range of extras including the normal trailers, making of docs and a (slightly grating) director’s commentary.
There is one feature that was fairly interesting for no other reason then it was a nice touch and that is a glossary of terms for the less ‘sci-fi’ initiated among us.
Conclusion
The film is actually quite watchable and in parts genuinely funny.
If you have no appreciation for cult/sci-fi then the in jokes are a non starter and if you have no love of fast talking comedy’s the films a non starter.
But with that taken into account (this reviewer is a fan of both the above :-) ) then I would certainly give this film a watch, you never know it might pleasantly surprise you.
