Synopsis:
Max Ophuls is widely regarded to be one of the greatest and most revered directors in the history of cinema. His trademark array of lavish, fluid camera movements would influence generations of filmmakers to come. Among the many who have had praised his genius are Francois Truffaut, Jean-Luc Goddard, Martin Scorsese, Stanley Kubrick, who believed 'his camera could pass through walls' and more recently directors such as Todd Haynes (Velvet Goldmine, Far From Heaven) and Paul Thomas Anderson (Boogie Nights, Magnolia) who called him his 'idol'.

Idealistic Leonora is looking for the dream life and believes she's found it when introduced to millionaire Smith Uhlrig. Quickly married she soon discovers him to be a domineering tyrant. In trying to escape this loveless existence she finds hope in the arms of a caring doctor but her psychotic husband doesn't give up his possessions so easily.

Ophul's film noir classic is an intense melodrama played to perfection by the fine casting of James Mason, Robert Ryan and Barbara Bel Geddes

Your Opinions and Comments

Hi Stuart
I have just watched The Reckless Moment and I agree with your comments about Ophuls (Opuls-often different spelling) His European movies are wonderful (La Ronde was based on a play about V.D I believe!) but its the Hollywood ones that marmalise the rest of the pretenders.
Have to get Caught now-its your fault!!

Just doing my job maam. It's great that these films still deliver a 'wow' - even in a world where CGI makes everything possible. And on that note...high time we heard from you again. I really miss your very personal and amusing reviews.

Sue - the shiny new world of My Reviewer is BRILLIANT ...you'd love it! If (nay - WHEN!) you get re-instated, you get copied in on all the press releases and you can request the discs that interest you most or that you think you'd be able to cover. Sometimes that includes books / albums etc if that's your bag. Personally I'm hoping for more interview opportunities ...but we definitely need some girl power!!

I agree with everything Stuart says, it really is a much much better system than we had. We sometimes even get multiple sets of discs sent out because we request them directly rather than having to always fight over one - doesn't always work but hey...

Have you managed to wander over and check out the individual sites at all? I got onto mine late and don't update mine as much as our resident anime expert (or anyone else actually), but it's aces.

It would be great to see you back.
