Synopsis:
Two-time Oscar nominee Winona Ryder stars in this moving and inspirational film based on a true story about a young woman’s experience inside a psychiatric hospital.

Questionably diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, Susanna (Winona Ryder) rebels against the head nurse (Whoopi Goldberg) and top psychiatrist (Vanessa Redgrave), choosing instead to befriend her fellow inmates – a group of troubled women in particular the seductively charismatic sociopath Lisa - a force to be reckoned with, played by Oscar winning actress Angelina Jolie).

Susanna resolves to reclaim her freedom, but first she`ll have to face the person who terrifies her most of all... herself.

Your Opinions and Comments

8 / 10
A good drama with an excellent performance by Ryder and Jolie.
The story is the true story of a girl with a Borderline Personality and her transition from sanity to insanity and back to sanity.
The video transfer is nice. No compression signs at all.
The DD 5.1 soundtrack is good, with some occasion usage of the surrounds.
The menus are still but have a nice musical score that accompanies them.
The extras include a behind the scenes look, some deleted scenes and a commentary by the director. Nice, but not exceptional.
Bottom line - a sad and slow drama with some strong performances by the leads.

There is no doubting that this film contains some excellent performances from both Angelina Jolie and Winona Ryder as the two main…er. well, mental cases! This film is not really my kind of thing, but I still enjoyed the film as a whole and was particularly impressed by the faultless supporting cast, even a remarkably toned down Whoopi Goldberg.

The disc itself is well presented, with an excellent transfer and a DD5.1 soundtrack. The are even a number of extras - a director's commentary, a making of, deleted scenes (with optional commentary, which I always find useful), filmographies, trailer and isolated score. The menus are static but still visually pleasing and easy to navigate.

Overall, while this isn't really my kind of film, the performances were excellent, and the disc is presented well. Currently available at play.com for £9.99.
