Much as A Nightmare Before Christmas showed us that there are other ways of doings top motion than Wallace and Gromitt, ANTZ shows there are better ways of doing CGI than Disney and Toy Story know!
This IS NOT a film for kids - loud and large it gets a bit eyewatering and 80% of the jokes would fly right over their heads. It`s also a talkie movie with Woody Allen`s Z having more than enough to say - I think this is a good thing, more character etc, but would bore kids.
If you like the Toy Story/Bugs life thing at all GET THIS - it`s truly amazing.
All in all, it`s a nice movie, but it lacks that certain charm and is DEFINITELY not suitable for children. It includes some very intense moments (and that`s putting it mildly).Oh yeah, it`s not as funny as it claims to be.
The video transfer is very good. There are no compression signs at all and the CG ants (and other creatures) are all good looking (although their textures are sometimes not convincing).
The DD 5.1 soundtrack is ok. The surrounds are used extensively to create a very ant-like sound envelope. The occasional left-to-right pan (and vice versa) is also good.
The menus are all hilariously animated with sounds.
The extras include a commentary by the directors, a behind the scenes look, some explanations about how the animation was done and some production notes. The extras are quite satisfying.
Bottom line - All in all, a cool movie. But, I can`t help myself and I simply got to say that if you`re looking for an animated feature about ants, try "A bug`s life" instead. It`s by far superior to this movie.
