Review for WWE Money in the Bank 2016
Money in the Bank is one of the few PPVs that I do get excited about. Much like the Royal Rumble, it always feels like this match is a true opportunity for someone to break into the main event. It is true that I hate the way people cash in out of the blue, which was amazing when Edge did it the first time, but when you have seen it year after the year it becomes a bit boring.
However, this year I was truly excited. Everyone in the match could easily win and go on to be a champion, there were no 'why is he in this match?' which happens a lot. The fact that this year's PPV is not a one match event is also great. Instead we have the amazing return of Seth Rollins to challenge Roman Reigns for the belt that he never actually lost and also the Dream Match of AJ Styles against the returning John Cena in a match 15 years in the making. Could this be the PPV of the year?
Golden Truth vs. Breezango
I hate to admit it, but I loved the whole story going into this match. The actual match was great and I don't think I have ever seen Goldust look better. His teamwork with Truth should just be throwaway comedy, but instead it does work.
The Lucha Dragons vs. The Dudley Boyz
A great match, but the more I see the Dudleyz, the more the nostalgia is starting to wear off. I do hope at some point they would allow them, particularly Bubba Ray who established himself as a credible main eventer as Bull Ray in TNA, to go on singles runs. Still great tag match from both teams.
Fatal 4-Way for the WWE Tag Team Championship
The New Day vs. Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows vs Enzo Amore and Big Cass vs, The Vaudevillains
Mess. That's what this match was. Not saying it wasn't filled with exciting moments, but it just felt like it was a mess. I felt that it was time for New Day to drop the belts and either move on or be in the hunt for the belts, but the match felt like a complete mess and the ending was awful. What I will say is that I do wish that The New Day were as entertaining in the ring bell to bell as they are before the match. They would be great with a Piper's Pit-style segment on Raw or Smackdown, but once that bell goes something just doesn't work for me.
Baron Corbin vs. Dolph Ziggler
Should have been a dark match. Neither got over and the chant of 'Boring' couldn't be denied. This match was a bit dull.
Charlotte and Dana Brooke vs. Natalya and Becky Lynch
This match just didn't work. I'm not going to dispute the effort put in, but it didn't work and what does Natalya turning Heel do for anyone? A real letdown. When I look back at the amazing match at Wrestlemania I am wondering what has happened with the women's division?
Apollo Crews vs. Sheamus
This was a good match, but didn't feel like a PPV match. I enjoyed it and was great to see Sheamus do the right thing, I just question whether it should have been done in a better way.
AJ Styles vs. John Cena
This is the very definition of a dream match. I never expected to ever see this match happen and I am so glad that it did.
Everyone who says that Cena cannot wrestle needs to watch this match and eat their words. I'm not a fan of the showy aspect of his performances sometimes, but in this match it worked perfectly. Both worked amazingly and it is more sad that this wasn't a main event as it truly deserved to be the match that we ended the PPV on... until the ending which was a little cheap, but hopefully it leads to a rematch.
Money in the Bank Ladder Match
Sami Zayn vs. Kevin Owens vs. Dean Ambrose vs. Chris Jericho vs. Cesaro vs. Alberto Del Rio
This match was just brutal. Usually there are one or two moments when you think it's gone too far, but this match had multiple moments. The fact that everyone could have won made it very exciting. The match had some great moments and is possibly one of the best Money in the Bank's I have seen in a long time. The winner thoroughly deserved it and really by him winning it made the main event all the more interesting. This is exactly what this match needs to be.
WWE US Championship
Rusev vs. Titus O'Neil
Not a fan of either of these guys and so had no care about this match and not really sure what they were fighting for, apart from the belt. But at least I got to see Lana and that's always a plus point.
WWE World Heavyweight Championship
Roman Reigns vs. Seth Rollins
We knew this match would happen at some point and the match did not disappoint. Rollins has returned back from injury just as good as he ever was and the back and forth between the two former friends along with the storyline that went with it made this an exciting match up. As for the ending. JUST WOW!!!
This years' Money in the Bank was a fantastic PPV. It is possibly the best one of these I have seen in a long time. No matches (apart from the Tag, Rusev/Titus, Corbin/Ziggler and Sheamus/Crews) were skippable and even they are still fine matches, just compared to the rest they weren't as good. However, when you consider that one of those matches is a Match of the Year contender between AJ Styles and John Cena that is still not a bad thing. The ending of the PPV was a little obvious, but I can't say that I wasn't happy with it.
