Review for WWE Destruction of The Shield
The Shield consist of three of the most important superstars in the WWE at the moment. Since 2012, Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns have taken the wrestling world by storm and whether collectively or after last year separately they created some of the most exciting moments and matches in the WWE.
Destruction of The Shield looks at all three and how they got to the WWE. It is great that WWE have been able to negotiate with companies like Ring of Honor and Dragongate USA to show their days before they got to the big leagues. We get to see all three developed and how they were introduced to the WWE Universe. From then the rocket was strapped to them and they took off, bulldozing through anyone in their path.
In 2014, due to Seth Rollins' betrayal, the group disbanded and they all went their separate ways. Seth Rollins went on to win the Money in the Bank Briefcase (which as of writing this, he hasn't cashed in), Dean Ambrose became a loose cannon with his 'Lunatic Fringe' gimmick and Roman Reigns, after winning the Rumble (though this set ends at Summerslam 2014, before this happened) is on his way to Wrestlemania. All three will and have main evented PPVs and will no doubt be the faces of the company in the years to come. All three show throughout the two disks just why they were so effective individually and even moreso as a group.
This was a fascinating documentary, that is sadly shortchanged by time at a little over an hour. Personally, I think they could have done an hour just on them getting to the WWE, an hour on them in The Shield and then another hour on everything since their split, but maybe that's me being greedy. Thankfully, this two disk Bluray is dripping with amazing extra features to fill in all the gaps. Before each match one of the three comment on the match and it does make me wonder why this wasn't just slotted into the main feature as it would have made it feel more thorough. Though the lack of any The Shield promos or from any of them since the split is a shame.
Matches from FCW between Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins are fantastic in a 15 and 30 minute Iron Man Matches. I was overwhelmed by just how good they were and it is a shame that WWE don't do more with their FCW catalogue, especially when they have so many talents who came through their developmental.
A Triple Threat between Roman Reigns, Ambrose and Rollins is also fantastic and showed how great they all were at that time. Ambrose also has a wonderful match against William Regal which shows just how great Regal was at helping people getting over. We also get to see Seth Rollins became the first NXT Champion.
Getting into the WWE they include a number of great moments and matches. Their debut in a TLC match against Ryback and Team Hell-No is fantastic in its utter brutality and almost back to the Hardyz/Edge and Christian/Dudleyz-era of just crazy moments. Dean Ambrose winning the US Title against Kofi Kingston and The Shield defeating Team Hell-No for the Tag Titles as well as their defence against The Usos are all fantastic. It would be easy to say that any time any of the three are in the ring it is simply electric. Seeing Dean Ambrose against The Undertaker is also a pretty cool moment and certainly one that needs seeing again.
Including the classic Survivor Series Match which features The Shield teaming with The UnAmericans against Rhodes Brothers, Rey Mysterio and The Usos is a great match. It does show that the WWE really did think Reigns would be the breakout star, though they have all done this. We also get to see them in the Royal Rumble and I will still say that this Rumble was one of the worst in its history, however watching it only focusing on The Shield members and ignoring the ridicuous moments and finish it is fine.
Their match against the Wyatt Family at Elimination Chamber and Elimination Match against Evolution at Payback are included and are just simply fantastic. The Wyatts are probably the only other faction to include three people (Bray Wyatt in particular) who has just broken that glass ceiling and become superstars.
The Money in the Bank Ladder match featuring Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose is possibly one of the most emotionally charged version of this match in a long time. After this we have Ambrose and Rollins' match and Reigns against Randy Orton at Summerslam. Both are good, though I think, because of the story going into it, Ambrose and Rollins knocked this out of the park. Finally, we have two matches from Raw one with Seth Rollins against Dean Ambrose in a fantastic Falls Count Anywhere match. The other is Rollins against Reigns, which is fine, but nothing special.
The Destruction of The Shield is a great set and no doubt in a few more years all three will have their own individual set. If these three are the future of the WWE, then the company is in good hands.
