Review of James Brown Live from the House of Blues

7 / 10

Introduction

The Godfather of Soul himself captured on DVD live at the House of Blues.

With songs from Mr. Browns five decades of popularity this disc should provide something for all fans of James Brown and even those who only have a passing interest in his work.

75 minutes of roaring soul music to be played loud, very loud.

Video

I have to say I wasn`t expecting great things from the video on this disc, my view being that it was really secondary to the audio. I was wrong.

The image is a very clear anamorphic widescreen presentation that captures the atmosphere inside the theatre extremely well, with the comparisons between the darkly lit audience and Mr Browns vibrant blue suit startling.

Towards the middle of the feature we are even treated to crystal clear images of the sweat on Browns face. Nice.

Audio

You can take your pick from DTS, DD5.1 or DD2.0 for this disc. Personally I went for the DTS soundtrack first of all as I find this gives a much more fuller envelope of sound than the DD5.1. This was the case again with this disc, but I must stress that the DD5.1 track is superb in it`s own right and non DTS users should not be put off.

Features

A region 2 disc with DTS audio and extras. What is the world coming to?

We are given an on screen interview with the producers and also a bonus performance by local talent Tomi Rae. This bonus performance also includes footage of James Brown prior to the concert when the stage and musical instruments are being set up.

The menus are some of the best I have seen on a disc, either region 1 or 2. They are nicely animated and include dome very nice touches when items are selected. Above that they are also easy to navigate which is always a bonus.

Conclusion

A superb disc. Turn the audio up loud and enjoy the excellent audio and the marvellous video. Turn you lights down and imagine you are actually there.

This disc is that good.
