Review of Are You All That?

6 / 10

Introduction

It`s DVD game time again. This one`s just a bit too late for the Xmas market, but maybe they`re going for the year-round trivia DVD market.

Enter another interactive DVD quiz. Like the others out there, the format is simple, answer questions, win points, score double on your "favourite trivia" round. Impress your friends and family with your knowledge of inane trivia like the slowest England Test batsman (wicket keeper Bob Taylor) and his average run rate (27.14 runs per 100 balls).

The question format is simple - 1 question, 3 possible answers, 8 categories with questions selected at random from any of them. You can choose how many questions make up a game, somewhere between 10 and 100. And you can have 1-4 players (or 1-4 teams).

Video

A full frame NTSC transfer, which just features some cheap graphics knocked up by a high school student using MS Paint. Ok, that`s perhaps a bit harsh, but this is really just a DVD featuring no actual footage at all. It`s all bits of computer generated graphics, fonts etc. It`s not that inspiring, but at least it gets the job done.

As with other DVDs of this ilk, it can be a bit slow to get around the questions, which would seem to be the DVD player switching between lots of tracks quickly.

Audio

Just a DD2.0 stereo track which is perfectly adequate. You can hear the questions, and you can hear the cheesey music (again no actual music is available, just copyright free synth type stuff).

And you can hear the rather annoying question master who has lots of handy hints for you during the game such as "shizzle my nizzle". He`ll also point out when you`re not scoring well. This is supposed to be the "hip" bit, but it`s just annoying as part of a trivia game.

Conclusion

Do you enjoy trivia? Do you enjoy quizzes? Do you scream at some of the idiotic contestants when Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, The Weakest Link and other programmes are on TV? If so then this is your chance to prove your mastery of trivia. This one is a region 1 title, so much of the trivia has a US slant on it, and that could be a good thing as you`ll get some difficult questions to baffle your trivia mad friends.

Like the other DVD games, it`s an interesting idea for a DVD and well executed. 1500 questions should keep you going for a while, as long as you don`t get too annoyed by your virtual host and quizmaster.

It all looks and sounds fine, and is perfectly playable, all with your normal DVD player. What more can you want? I`m sure more titles will be following soon, and rumours are still abound that Trivial Pursuit is about to put in an appearance as a DVD game.
