Review of Just Married

6 / 10

Introduction

"Just Married" is a sort of "National Lampoon`s Vacation: The Next Generation", full of pratfalls, culture-clash jokes and insane jealousy. Ashton Kutcher (of "Dude, Where`s My Car") even goes completely postal just like Chevy Chase.

Brittany Murphy from "Clueless" plays Kutcher`s new bride, and arriving back from their honeymoon, the couple is on the verge of divorce - or murder, whichever comes first. They have just been on the honeymoon from Hell and the prospects of a happy ending to this romantic comedy seem pretty slim.

But a romantic comedy it is - albeit a post-Farrelly Bros. romantic comedy. Some gags are wearingly familiar, others verge on the inspired. At least there aren`t any genuinely quease-making bodily substances jokes. Oh, and no "I musht be dreaming" comment when the prospective mother-in-law tells our hero he can call her "Pussy" now? Tisk.

Video

Presented in anamorphic 1.85:1, you gets what you expected - a brand new copy of a brand new film. Colours are bright, contrast is excellent, wear and tear is nonexistent.

Audio

The movie comes, not surprisingly, with Dolby Digital 5.1 as standard. The sound is a lively, full-throated mix which will keep your amplifier active, if not your subwoofer.

Features

The movie comes with a DD2.0 stereo commentary track with both stars and the director present. Keeping back-slappery to a reasonable low, some interesting insights are given into the film-making process (and what complete wusses modern actors are. There are some deleted scenes, a "making of" quickie that lasts three and a half minutes, a theatrical trailer, and a trailer for the upcoming "Le Divorce". Subtitles are readily available, including ones for the yak track. The low point of the extras is an interminable 21 minute promo programme from "Comedy Central". This staggeringly cr*p piece is fronted by some so-called comic showcasing his Hispanic Julian Clary style act as much as promoting the movie.

Conclusion

A pleasingly dumb piece of cinema, but nothing you`ll remember in a couple of weeks` time. The only really entertaining part of the movie, the strange bulldog owned by Brittany Murphy`s character, succumbs early in the movie to a gag stolen from "There`s Something About Mary".
