Review of Repossessed
Introduction
With the recent success of the rather appalling Scary Movie franchise, it seems that a bunch of DVD distributors are cashing in on the spoof trend by re-releasing efforts from the early 90s. Repossessed, is a complete p***-take of the much over-hyped `Exorcist`. However, right from the get-go you can see the movie pulled off two major casting coups, by not only acquiring Leslie `Naked Gun` Nielsen, but also surprisingly the one & only Linda Blair, as she reprises her role as the infamous demon from the cult horror flick.
I somewhat vaguely remember watching this movie when it was first released, and my instincts tell me I quite enjoyed it as a mindless snot-nosed little rug rat who pooped his pants anytime he`d watch anything remotley scary. However, using the IMDB for reference of what other people thought of the movie (which I always stupidly do prior to watching a flick) it didn`t exactly fill me with optimism. Still, it is Leslie Nielsen, and his comical charisma seems to be enough for many people to satisfy them, regardless of the fact they`ve just watched an a piece of crap of a movie.
Video
Repossessed does fantastically well in re-creating Linda Blair`s demon from the Exorcist movie in a much more lighter & comical tone. Repossessed`s menus from what I saw were down right awful, and resembled that of a series of 80`s computer game static menu screens.
The transfer is re-worked well & deals with the many dark scenes in the movie competently.
Audio
Repossessed features a lot of humorous cursing, gasping & generaly unorthodox sound effects. All of which blend quite well together when all hell is going down in the exorcism scenes.
Features
A revolutionary trailer, which consists of all the best gags from the movie. Watch this in preference to the full-length feature.
Conclusion
A movie I remember once finding enjoyment out of, prompts me to have a re-think in what I saw in this futile attempt at a comedy. Pretty much everything here is covered in the opening sequence in Scary Movie 2 to much better effect, and you don`t really care to see an overly long mocking of just one film. As a result, Repossessed ends up getting tiresome very fast, and never really offers you any reason to go back. There aren`t any extra features, which isn`t a surprise, and I doubt anybody would seriously care.
That said, the disc`s presentation aspects are fine, and with the retail of this baby at around 12 quid at Amazon, fans of the movie could well opt to give this a shot, and why not. I just happen to think this movie sucks pretty damn bad.
