Review of South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut

8 / 10

Introduction

South Park : Bigger, Longer, Funnier.

The boys from South Park find their way on to the big screen in this extended adventure featuring all your favourites from the series plus some new South Park versions of famous people.

I won`t go into the story, suffice to say it`s completely crazy and wacky. And fun. Technically the film could be classed as a musical as there are plenty of songs in it. Now I hate musicals but these songs are great - you`ll be humming them for weeks - just don`t sing them too loud in polite company, or you`ll get some very funny looks!

Video

Two transfers are on offer here, one on each side of the disc. On side one you`ll find a 1.85:1 anamorphic transfer, and on side two you`ll find a full frame 4:3 transfer. The quality of both is pretty good, free from dirt and scratches and certainly better than the DVDs of the TV series. Not to say that they`re all that bad, just that they could be better and suffer from artefacts, which this disc doesn`t.

Back to the disc in hand - you should really watch the 1.85:1 version, as you see all of the picture, but it might seem odd after watching the TV series in 4:3.

Audio

A DD5.1 soundtrack, which while not pushed to the maximum does its job admirably during certain scenes, with plenty of surround action going on in places. The dialogue is clear and audible, and free from the bleeping of the TV series, so you can hear several hundred swear words in full glory.

The highlight here would have to be the songs - which are hilarious and not your usual film fare at all!

Features

Not much in the way of extras, a music video, the full length trailer and a few teaser trailers (which are identical for the first 30 seconds, and have about another 10 seconds of content). They are briefly amusing but don`t have any real lasting value.

Conclusion

This is one of the funniest films around. Fans of the series will love it. If you don`t like the series (or bad language) then you should stay well away! It`s not subtle, it`s not particularly clever, it`s not likely to win any awards, it`s just very funny.

The disc itself is ok, with good picture and sound. It would have been nice to see some more extras (although something like a director`s commentary just wouldn`t work for this film!)

You should go and buy this and prepare to laugh until it hurts!
