Review of Cleopatra 2525: Season 1 Vol. 1 Episodes 1 to 7
Introduction
An "exotic dancer" goes in for some "breast augmentation" in the present day, but instead gets cryogenically frozen (something goes wrong apparently). She is found in 2525, and is revived, where she joins a skimpily-outfitted (for a 12 certificate) bunch of freedom fighters who are trying to take back the earth after robots have taken over. No I`m not making that up, that`s the premise for the show.
It sounds a bit wacky, but it just might work.
Video
A standard full-frame transfer. I`m assuming that the show was made this way, as I can`t see any reason why someone would want to spend money making it in widescreen. Some of the special effects aren`t very special, and they do rather detract from the action as you play "spot the join between live action and CGI". There is a lack of detail at times, with the picture looking a bit soft.
Audio
A DD2.0 stereo soundtrack which is adequate yet unspectacular, although it does seem to lack some bass during the action scenes. Some of the dialogue is incredibly cringeworthy, and the less said about that annoying theme tune the better.
Features
Not a sausage.
Conclusion
This show was made in 2000, and then cancelled in 2001 - you might have worked out why.
They run around a bit, they scream, they fire lasers. Once again, I think that the 12 certificate is the upper limit on who should watch it, not the lower limit! Perhaps it`s not helped by the very short 22 minute episodes, but it really just doesn`t work at all. The dialogue isn`t up to much, the plots are wafer thin, and the acting consists of running around and wearing garments not really suited to battling killer robots.
The whole thing could have worked (equally odd premises have turned into good shows), but it just seems to be an excuse to see women running around a bit under the premise of science fiction. If it was supposed to be a spoof then it might have had some value, but it`s serious, and it flops flat on its face.
Sam Raimi & Robert Tapert should hang their heads in shame. Avoid unless you are under 12, or really have nothing better to do (like clean out the garage or something)....
