Review of Gloria Estefan: Live In Atlantis

4 / 10

Introduction

Gloria punches out a few of her favorite tunes in the English language but the majority of this disc is filled with too much of her Spanish work. You`d have to be a real die hard fan to want this platter in your collection but that said it is a live concert and if you`ve got a decent set up it does sound pretty good but also has some annoying flaws...

Video

The video is average quality which is the norm for many of these live concert events. There`s quite lot of macro blocking and blurring on fast moving images. And white haloing is very evident and even annoying at times. On the other hand colour are nice and bright with a good level of contrast between blacks and bright whites.

Audio

Not very good to say it`s in Dolby Digital 5.1. I`ve heard what DD and DTS can do with the likes of The Eagles - Hell Freezes Over LIVE DVD. This doesn`t match up in any way. It`s not awful but it lacks the superb fidelity you get with movie music. The vocals are harsh and the bass extension is not up to the job. Concerts like this pack a big bass punch and this DVD fails to deliver the feel of being there. The biggest niggle is that the audio is out of sync. It`s not that noticeable on long shots but as soon as were close enough to see Gloria`s mouth moving were a fraction of a second out and it`s really noticeable. My first thought was that she was miming, this isn`t the case.

Features

A couple of extra tracks, discography and a text only section about recording her latest album.

Not exactly exciting stuff!

Conclusion

To many Spanish tracks plus the bad sound and out of sync problems would make me think twice about buying this unless you a really big fan!
