Review of Brit Awards 2002

Introduction

The Brit Awards have come a long way since their ignominious beginnings. They now have a kudos - at least in this country - that the Grammy awards just don`t have.

Whether you were champing at the bit to see who would win which award, or you couldn`t get Kylie`s gravity-defying white frock out of your head, this disc has something for everyone. Twenty-five of the year`s most spectacular music videos from Kylie`s warm front to Christopher Walken`s show-stopping dance performance to Fatboy Slim`s "Weapon of Choice".

Video

Faultless. Colours are bright, contrast and details are perfect. You`ll never see these videos better - certainly not the way broadcasters cut them short or otherwise mess with them. The transfer is basic 4:3 non anamorphic, with wider aspect ratios shown as masked-down. Most of the better videos are still shot 4:3 at any rate.

Audio

Being music videos, these are simple Dolby Digital 2 channel Stereo.

Features

This disc is really extras-lite. There just aren`t any, with the exception of some textual biography notes and weblinks. There are no subtitles or lyrics.

Conclusion

I had a ball with this disc. I`m getting to that age where I don`t follow the music scene with as much interest as I might have once (anybody who says Bay City Rollers had better be smiling). This year has seen some terrific music videos, not least Sophie Ellis-Bextor`s brilliant debut "Take Me Home". Normally you can only get the odd good music video, most often a lousy Quicktime video included on the CD-single. This disk has twenty-five - count `em - twenty-five of the year`s best. This is a disk I`m very happy with.
